Have a question for you guys. I have a Palomar 250 (with (2) sd 1446's). Would it be ok to run this with a Cobra 29 that has a 1 watt DK but swings to 40 watts? Isnt a 40 watt swing a little much for this amp? Or would it be better to run it with an untouched/factory spec Cobra 29?

    Thanks for the help?

I must be doing something wrong my Cobra 29 has a carrier of 4 watts and pep of 16 watts, your radio must be modded to swing 40 watts with only a single final, that being said, from my experience if you keep input wattage low ( .5 to 1.5 watts) there shouldn't be an issue, I have run dual final radios into that type of amp and didnt have issues except for amp getting really hot, usually carrier out of amp on high setting was around 45 watts and pep was 180 to 190 watts.

Yes, you are correct. It has been tuned/modded, schottky diodes, etc. The swing has been confirmed on (3) different bird meters now. I just thought that the Palomar 250 worked best with a 20 watt...ish swing. I was worried that 40 might be too much. Thank you for your help.

Would probably sound cleaner with stock pep wattage ( 12 to 16 watts) and prolong life of amp, there is a good review on cbradiomagazine.com, he primarily stresses carrier input instead of swing, however he does state that he ran 12 watts and 30 watts ssb without issue. You may want to find specs for amp and see watt pep limits are according to manufacture.

I agree it would be better with just the stock swing, but, I'm OTR right now, and only have 2 radios with me to choose from. Either a stock, unmodded Cobra (4watt dk 16 watt swing) or the "modded" cobra (1watt dk 40 watt swing). I also have a Galaxy 929 in here, but it does 1 watt dk 35 watt swing also. I have to choose one of these

If you want to fry it, go for it.

I would use the stock radio.

That's what I was thinking also, just use the stock radio with a smaller swing. Plus, I doubt it has a true 4 watt DK, prob more like 2 or maybe 3 watts. Thank you sir for your help.

BTW, for anyone who is curious, Chris Holland is the one who set up the radio for this amp. He also set up another radio of mine to put a 35 watt swing into a small KL200p amp. I'm beginning to question his ability.

Experience is a good teacher, if you could get pep reduced on the 929 ( mosfet final should swing no more than 20 watts) it would be a good radio to use because it has a variable rf control and you could adjust the carrier input to get the appropriate carrier out of amp, it sounds to me like the modulation limiter has been removed thats why modulation is greater then 100%.

One last option would be to buy a new Uniden 980 (since they are notoriously known for being weak) and just hook it up to the KL203p I have here in the truck and call it a day. Pilot has a sale on them right now for $130.
