Have the engine brake hydraulic pistons checked. It is a known issue with the d13. The tops come unscrewed. They either have to be tightened back up or replaced with the new revised version.
D13 and with i shift, vibration using stage 3 engine brake.

Did you get the problem fixed? We are having the same issues with a 2013 Volvo. Noticed that the vibrations only happen when the turbo preasure reaches about 28 psi in brake position 3 on ours.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Also having same issue with 2015 D13. Stage 1 & 2 engine brake work fine, but on stage 3 it starts vibrating/pulsating so bad I’m waiting for something to fly up thru the hood so I try to avoid using it. Started doing this after truck’s first overhead was done about 100k ago. Odometer is showing 455k now.
So it’s the engine brake’s pistons that need adjusted or replaced? I have never heard of engine brake pistons. I assumed it was either valvetrain or injector/cup problem. -
Dealer ended up doing a repair similar to what Amram described in the post responding to me, and it fixed the issue for the rest of the time I had the truck. However the driver that has it now claims it is vibrating again, although I haven’t verified if it is the same vibration and intensity.
But for the record, my 2019 with 10k miles has started the significant vibration on position 3 engine brake already. Although it’s not consistent, only does it about 20% of engine brake applications. Must be a common issue -
I went to the dealer and they ended up replacing the turbo and doing an overhead adjustment but it didn’t change the vibration at all. I asked about the redesigned engine brake pistons but they said you have to buy a whole new rocker arm. Did you happen to have a part number for what they replaced?

My 2018 does it, but only occasionally. I figured it was just the price you have to pay to drive the best class 8 CMV ever.

Sounds like the engine brake isn't firing on all cylinders like when you run a X15 Cummins engine brake on low... it shakes cause it's not Activating all 6 cyl.
Overhead is the very first place i would look to repair!x1Heavy and Newto Trucking Thank this. -
2014 volvo d13 ,10 speed,500hp
Started doing the exact same thing
Engine brakes, 1and 2 ok but 3 starts shaking. Pretty bad .
please keep it going so we can have some idea where to start the reapairs from. may be some mechanic from somewhere may come up with some idea of what to do . -
Exhaust Brake Plungers are Backing out...Have any Volvo shop check them and Readjust... It’s not actually part of doing an “Overhead” so it gets overlooked... Essentially Your engine brake starts “missing” creating a vibration under max engine brake..
