Actually the 625s are 17:1 but the 550s are 18:1, guess thats why the 550s go so well when you put a 625 ECM on them.

Great forum you guys are running here!!! 2WS owner here, havent done anything to it yet, but it is getting closer all the time. I spent a week this fall driving a "hot" cat and it would embarass the crap out of my truck. Kinda taken the fun out of driving a 550. Thanks for having me here, there is an incredible amount of Cat info here, my eye balls are spinning:biggrin_25519:. Cant wait to get the magic 50 posts in. Keep the GREAT info coming guys........... david

Wouldn't that higher compression ratio hurt performance? I was thinkin of puttin 14.6:1 pistons in mine when it comes time to overhaul.

Info is from Cat but not Cat SIS or TMI as they say both 550 and 625 are 18:1, I thought they should be different since they have different part number pistons so I checked with our TC, he contacted the engineers and they confirmed the 625 is actually 17:1. Funny enough the only correct reference they could send me was the reman short block listing which shows up to 550 as 18:1 and 600 to 625 as 17:1.

Lowering compression doen't make more horsepower in fact all other thing being equal it will reduce power ( and fuel economy ).
The reason you drop the compression to make big power is to keep cyinder pressures under control when you wind up the boost and dump in heaps of fuel, reducing timing has the same effect. Too much compression and timing will blow out the head gasket as soon as you wind up the power but for as long it lasts a higher compression engine will make more power and be better on fuel.

    HISPEED428 Thanks this.
