Alrighty, let's get this mega post started, I got a callback today from the company I applied to 3 weeks ago. I've been given an offer of employment (yes!) to start work out of their Brandon terminal right at the beginning of NH3 season (a big money month apparently).

I have not officially accepted it yet, as I feel I should give everything some thought and time. I know I was incredibly zealous the past couple weeks getting the process underway, but I don't want to jump just because the hoop was put in front of me. I want to consider every factor between what I'm leaving behind and what I'm going to.

I shouldn't be making this decision because I'm frustrated or angry, I should be making it because in every facet, it should be an upgrade to what I'm currently doing, not just moving for the sake of change.

Now, to the details...

Biggest draw for me has been the home time. I was informed today that if I were to work the "4 on, 4 off" schedule they have in place, I would approximately make what I made last year at my current company.

What really blows my mind about this, and what I didn't fully realize till earlier today when I did the math, but, if it's fair to say that I currently work on average, 5 days a week (some it's 6 and some its 4), 50 weeks out of the year (two off for paid holidays), that would mean 250 working days, at approximately 12 hours a day on average.

On a 4/4 schedule, there are only 182.5 working days in that same 365 period (NOT accounting for paid holidays), that's a difference of 67.5 LESS working days a year! Over TWO MONTHS less working days a year... AND MAKE THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY.

This alone is enough for me to fully and completely accept this opportunity. An extra two months of time every year to be at home with my wife, our cat and eventually children? How could I say no?

Secondly, the woman I spoke with sounded very excited to have me on the phone and give me the offer. She gave me what is essentially a two year plan to get me cross trained on every piece of equipment they use, from hoppers to end dumps to bottles and tankers. Giving me the opportunity to get involved in any of their offerings. What really surprises me is she wants me hauling fuel as soon as possible (training starting as early as June this year). From my initial impression from the original recruiter, I wouldn't be doing fuel for quite a while.

Lastly, she detailed the winter road operations, and said that getting me into that next winter would help me reach my target income for the year (I said I was looking for between 85 and 90 for the year). What it boils down to is about 20k for 4x two week trips up into the bush. I'm stunned.

All in all, I'm pretty much decided at this point, but I'm going to sit on it for a day or two, and see if I can come up with any reason why sticking it out with my current company would be a better decision.

@Grubby how many gallons would it take to paint that cab, hood and fenders and maybe some little odd and in stuff like step brackets and whatnot?
