California has about 154% of expected normal snow pack accumulated as of this winter in places of the Sierras. That is one hand very good drought free water conditions for once but on the other if these storms keep coming off the pacific we will see California flooding that are excessive.
I don't worry too much about snow pack on mountains until I get into Oregon and Washington, with 4 or 5 being active Volcanos (Mt Hood, Helens, Baker and so on) I keep a eye on what snow they have up top. Because when they erupt they create is called a Lahar. A mix of instant snow melt, mud etc forming a wet concrete river that is up to 50 or more feet high, rages at close to 90 mph and sometimes driven by pyroclasitc ash which is superheating if that hits a human it turns that human into a pile of ash down to the bones unrecognizeable pretty much instantly. If it gets into a engine of some kind it forms a sort of glass inside of it. Locks it right up when the internal oil fails.
All that gloom and doom on a pretty spring day. Ugh.
As luck would have it, I am following three fronts tonight. St Charles MO to Kansas City, Down below Salinas is one. Second is East Texas to Tulsa. Third is actually near Grissom TX (Armarillo east, 40 miles biggest cross in the free world) up to Liberal KS and back past Kit Carson (One of my favorite smaller quiet places to get a good truck meal and rest)
All of these storms are going to be noisy, violent etc. But move east in the night for MO, AR, LA tomorrow. We expect some action sometime. We have enough going on now to consider this a storm time. Just a quiet wait until the main event.WesternPlains, Dave_in_AZ and Lepton1 Thank this. -

By the way, if you set that trap, be REALLY careful setting the trigger. I used to trap muskrat and mink as a boy. The little traps, without the teeth, were a ##### if you caught your hand. A friend of mine was playing around with a bear trap and amputated a finger.
Just sayin'...Dave_in_AZ, x1Heavy and lovesthedrive Thank this. -

I had to do a whole lot of shooting later in life to make up for the nos that I heard at the skeet range. Pa was really good with that friend there but let me learn? noooo. So I went overboard at some point in my adult life. You can keep those 3 mile rifle shoots. I like em say 200 yards. with maybe a 45-70 Sharps. I know the sharps can plink 1000 yards, but there is no point. I just want to hit em one time so they don't get back up as Mr Mad Mad. I don't do well then.
The reference to Mr Madmad was written satire. A 45-70 is able to drop any animal on the planet earth.WesternPlains, tramm01, Cattleman84 and 1 other person Thank this. -
You're right about the 45-70... But at ranges past 300 yards the trajectory starts dropping like I stone!... Ive shot a 45-70 with a flip-up appeture peep sight... At 900 yards its impossible to keep any part of yout face against the stock while still being able to see the front sight through the peep! And a 24" white steel plate at nine hundred yards is #### near impossible to see with the naked eye... Especially through a peep sight!!!
But its #### satisfying when you hear the "TING" ring back at you through the air a few seconds after the report of the rifle.WesternPlains, InTooDeep, Dave_in_AZ and 3 others Thank this. -
But when you do hit, it drops — went old school a couple years back and bought a Winchester 1886 — got to get closer, but I will never go back to a scoped rifle.WesternPlains, Dave_in_AZ, Cattleman84 and 2 others Thank this.

If you think that's something else At the Police range in Searcy, try a 400 foot shot with a colt .45 230 grain ball standard about oh... 840 feet per second. It will be a while coming out of the gun. You mentally put a second full size 6 foot human target on the shoulders of the bottom human target and place your front sight about center mass of the stands on shoulder imaginary friend. Fire.
At 400 yards it should work out to about a 6 foot drop. Your round will rise then fall and should hit the bottom target about center mass give or take two feet.
I do have some supers in hardcast at 1350 fps. The ballistics on that round shows approximately18 inches at 50 and steeper and really dropping beyond 70 I have not had to fire that round yet, the box is still there waiting for it's day. 255 grain hardcast leaded jacket roundnose. I hear they don't quite make it like that anymore due to tree huggers crying about lead. (Blah.. fine get me DU... lols)
In searcy we have a BMG range indoor that is 100 yards. Put your man target out there and you will realize that the RO will come in and ask you to bring it in to about 30 yards only. The ceiling lights and cameras etc would be at risk.
With my eyes and a ACOG, 200 is all I am content with. Now if that is less than striving for precision long range sniper fire. Remember sniping is not my forte. I know i can hit a man at 200 or less. Anything beyond? Iffy. I know of people who shoot a quarter at 1000. Its thier quarter. Not mine.
A man with a tall hat visited fort stephens in 1862 or so when the confederates were making a demonstration against the fort but not really serious about taking the place. A sniper with his famous upper tube weapon engaged the tall hat man from the trees at approximately 600 yards. Considering the ballistics drop and about a half circle of Error when the round gets there it hit the secretary of President Lincoln 9 feet off to one side and behind a little bit.
THUMP! It's a hit, but not THE hit that the Confederate Sniper wanted.WesternPlains, Dave_in_AZ, Cattleman84 and 1 other person Thank this.
