With the Garmin, I use a dedicated tablet (NOT my phone) and keep WiFi, mobile data, etc turned off. $250 bought the ELD and no monthly fees. Data stored locally, NOT beyond your control on some 3rd party servers in cyberspace.

KeepTruckin is a popular ELD provider. There is also Omnitracs/Qualcomm, but it will cost a bit more. Omnitracs makes more sense for fleets or anyone who plans to build a fleet some day. I have Omnitracs. I paid about $800 for the IVG device, and pay about $30 per month. I think I will probably build a fleet.

Whoever you choose will likely not have you use your cellphone data. They will be providing a device that comes with a GPS tracker similar to a GPS device for navigation.

I like vdo over Omnitracs. So I think that says a lot right there. Been using it for over a year now. Any specific questions?

If all you are doing is logs, whatever is cheapest.....rather least inexpensive up front cost.
I have done some cost analysis and find they are all on a level playing field based on a 5 year plan.
Up front, plus monthly, plus any cell plans.
They all seem to cost between $45-$55 per month.

I will say if you are going to look into adding 3rd party apps/integration (Comdata/EFS/ CH Robisnon/Schneider, etc.) I would look into a more robust system.
I also would recommend using a device that can goefence locations, especially if you are making your own rate agreements.
There are a ton of apps that can add value just in data storage alone.....say your DVIR. Keeping those in digital format is worth a few dollars a month.
Its not the 90s anymore and tech is taking over. I embrace it.

This coming from a guy who started driving in 89'ish, and came off the road about 10 years ago.
As much of a PITA electronic logs are, it can very well help your bottom line, if you do it right.

I definitely embrace technology as well we have tractors that do pretty much everything but put fuel and seed in them the only problem I have is I have to put a device that can get me into trouble with the dot that's like going to court and telling the judge that you did it but at last the days of driving without a cdl are coming to a end fast as the government gets to involved in trucking
