I finally got my insurance quote back and it was ridiculous. They wanted 28,600 a year. That’s a lot more than I pay now. I made a few phone calls and got another quote for only 16k for the year. Needless to say, I’m going with a different broker. Exact same coverage and $12k less.

16k seems high to me, maybe refer is just naturally higher?

I’m also running new equipment. Physical damage on these high values drives up the price. I can live with 16k a year. The 28k number was stupid.

I’m loving this new Vector. I had 24 hours at 33 continuous and 32 hours at -10 and it used 13 gallons. I also finished updating my costs to reflect the new trailer and this much better insurance quote. At my current rate of pay, my break even is down to only 16300.00 a month, assuming 10k miles. I’m much happier with that number because, I’d like to increase my compensation by another 800-900 next year to start my 401k up again. I’ve been putting that off until I got new equipment on the road.

That’s awesome! I’m going to have to lookup this Vector unit. I just assumed I’d go with TK but you have me curious.

Also the 16,300... how much of that is your pay?

My compensation is 4600 a month. Part of it is 900 a month in per diem that the business pays me and also 330 a month pays my health insurance. Both of those avoid payroll tax.

    Dave_in_AZ and dwells40 Thank this.

Well done. I’m really impressed with your set up and how you are doing things. Not only will you be just fine through the bad times but will continue to prosper and grow. Even better if you ever did want to put a driver in the truck you are already budgeted for it. Would be no big deal whatsoever.

    JoeyJunk Thanks this.

I was strongly considering a TK S700. What sold me on the Vector was the low speed door switch, the electric hermetic compressor, no belts, and the electric heat. Because it’s completely electric it can operate very efficiently by turning off and on components only as they’re needed. That ability also allows it to stay in low speed longer. Even right now with a frozen load, and the 10 degree variance on this IntelliSet, it stays in low speed the entire time it’s running to bring it back to temp. The TK still uses their 4 cylinder reciprocating compressor for heating and cooling as well as a belt driven generator for everything else. It’s a good unit, but the Vector takes it a step farther.
No matter what you get, I strongly suggest Intellisets from Carrier or OptiSets with TK. They save a lot of money.

Try Great West. I pay 6k a year, now that's dry van, but it blows away any other quotes I've gotten.

Do you find that the rates for runs through the mountainous states justify the extra fuel cost? Or do you earn less money on those?
