What if it Snows?

The last time I saw enough ### to fill a bullrack all in the same place, it was climbing out both doors of a Swift truck!... Lol

But seriously, I've NEVER seen enough donkeys in one place to justify a bullrack to transport them... Not sure I'd want to even try to load them... Let alone UNLOAD them...

 

Seen a couple of herds of wild burros in NV that may have actually filled a trailer.

I would think unload them would be easy. Offer them carrots.

 

Donkeys are strange creatures... They dont like door ways... In a chute there is only one way to go...inside a trailer there would be ample room for them to turn, kick, bite and otherwise refuse to go where YOU want them to go.

 

The wild ones are mean and nasty — we tried roping a couple to break them to lead and practice team roping — epic fail. You do need a long rope and fast horse.

 

Go to sparks area a lot, up off USA parkway. Lots of construction going on.

They have some good size herds of wild horse in the hills. Sometimes they will just stand in the road, maybe 6 or 8 and will not move.

 

I can remember when I was really young a couple of the cowboys on the ranch tried to rope an elk... They did succeed eventually but those horses were about to drop dead from exhaustion.

What happened was a little rag horn bull got into the horse corral, and these 2 got the idea to try and head & heel it as they let it out.

Well when the gate came open that bull was off like a shot from a gun. The header was ready with a big horse ropers loop already built, and got one antler and the head first try... That's where it started to go down hill. Unlike a cow, the elk didnt try to pull away from the rope. Instead he quickly figued out what had ahold of him and proceeded to charge the headers horse. And the race was on... With the heeler trying desperately to get his rope around hooves...

But yet again, unlike a cow, an angry elk doesn't keep his feet close to the ground. Thus it took several attemps to catch hooves. Once they did have him stretched on the ground 2 more cowboys jumped in to help. One dismounted and put the others rope around front hooves the ran it over the elks neck in such a way that a quick flip and it would come loose freeing the elks head so it could stand up. Then the ground man removed the headers rope. Then the 2 with front and rear hooves let the elk up and it took off.

As a small boy it was all very exciting and COOL... As I grew older I began to realise how stupid and dangerous it really was... For all involved, especially the ground man.

But alas thats kinda how cowboys got the reputation as being wild and crazy... And I can admit that I have done my share of wild crazy stuff, both while cowboying and not. Lol... And more than once they have left me a heap in the dirt sucking wind that I couldnt seem to be able to find. Oh how youth can be so blissfully ignorant in the name of an adrenaline rush.

 

I can relate — my old uncle told me that a man had to be pretty tough to be as stupid as I was. To old to be that way now.
