Hey All, I'm ready to take my CDL Class A test in my dually. I have a few questions...
What kind of trailer do I take the test with? Can I use any regular trailer ie; gooseneck, bumper hitch, or does it need to be a trailer over 10K? Meaning i'd need to bring someone with a CDL with me..
Thanks!

You will get a CDL in the vehicle type you test with.
To get a CDL A with a 3500/f-350 you would need a trailer with a GVWR over 10k lbs and the GCWR over 26k lbs.
Some possible restrictions are:
Automatic transmission if not tested w/ a manual.
No air brakes.
No 5th wheel if testing with a bumper pull or gooseneck. Has to be a 5th wheel.
And yes, you will need a valid driver to take the rig to test with.Bigbubba1 Thanks this. -
So, I have to install a fifth wheel?... My trailer will be a gooseneck.

I you wanna not have that restriction then yes.

Your trailer has to be over 10,000 pounds or more in weight total plus the towing vehicle to make it a CDL A license.
You will not be getting airbrakes with that.
It is a combination vehicle so rates the Class A. You will be using a 5th wheel in the bed of your truck. The weights involved are just too heavy for bumper hitches.
Hopefully your dually is a manual so you can not have that auto restriction put on.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Also what would be the downside to having auto restriction if I will only ever be driving my truck? -
There is no downside to having automatic restriction, as long as you never plan on driving commercially with a standard shift vehicle. -
Automatic restriction won't be an issue at all.

Gooseneck is ok for freight.
Single pivot 5th wheel is good for cars
And double pivot 5th wheel is for rv.
Single pivot only tilts front/back and not side to side like an rv double pivot plate. -
I meant machinery, bobcats, scissor lifts things like that.
Not saying you can't throw a car or two, motorcycle on with a side by side & so on.24kHotshot Thanks this.
