Before Arrow went under, there were signs that they were in trouble. The guys who got caught out on the road chose to ignore the warnings. It was like that Harry Truman guy at Mt St Helens. He made his choice to stay and it cost him.
I always recommend that company drivers keep a grand in hand for just in case. The company doesn’t have to go under. They may have layoffs. They may fire you. Your truck may catch fire.Al. Roper, peterbilt_2005, sawmill and 17 others Thank this. -
My oh my..
You said it was a new truck right?

It's interesting how we reflect on what we were doing when disasters happen.
1995 was not a good year for your pal Red, so I remember seeing the OKC bombing on the news but it really didn't sink in until much later. It was a time of great personal drama that had my attention span focused on things a lot closer at the moment.
It was a bit different when 9/11 happened. Me and my bride were in the middle of a long weekend with her sister's family in Santa Barbara. If my memory holds up, our flights back home were the next day (Tuesday). We were sleeping on an air mattress in their living room and woke up about 0430, still a little time zone lagged. I rolled over and turned on the news, and watched it happen real time.
I guess we couldn't have picked a much better place to be stranded when all the air travel was shut down all week. I'd have rather it not happened, of course. Thursday morning I was starting to look online to find a beater car to buy and drive home, just when authorities decided to open the airports back up the following day.
Getting on a plane anywhere was a free for all, and we ended up returning to ATL via Boston. I'll never forget passing thru there and, during the layover, seeing all the combat equipped police, dogs, and whatnot.
@MagnumaMoose I hear you on how our public school system does a great job of filtering history lessons for those of us young enough to have not witnessed some things first hand. On the other hand, they now have the benefit of smart phones and internet to fill in the gaps. So, while it's a problem, it's not a total censoring like we might have experienced when we were still in grade school. -
Granted it's a completely different cab than what you have but this truck I drove
It had a weird electrical gremlin. It took 4 different Peterbilt shops to find a pinched harness under the floor board.

No Butter on these this morning

At least have $200 emergency money to buy a bus ticket and a couple bags of chips out of a vending machine to get home with. Self Preservation 101.
The idea that so many company drivers don't have two nickels to rub together most times, makes me think about the remarks @rank has made regarding foreign nationals filling driving jobs. It's another part of 21st century indentured servitude. The megas set these new, naïve drivers up to be so dependent, that they don't dare challenge their management, nor prepare for the moment their job vanishes before they know it.
Before you say it Six, I fully agree with the concept you speak of often regarding prevalent victimhood. I get it. I also see plenty of these future victims who never had a strong leader that lended them the confidence to do a better job of looking out for their own interest. I do my little part with the young men I have working for me, but so many more come into the industry desperate, soft, and completely suited to take all the crap their new trucking boss will dump upon them. -
I agree with you 100%..
In this day and age you are only a cab ride away from a rental car or airplane ride home.
Or some of us will fuel that baby up on our dime, make some phone calls, and haul freight on our own using their equipment.Al. Roper, BoostedTeg, sawmill and 20 others Thank this. -
I call it ‘The Driver’s Agenda’
1. Get Paid
2. Get Home Safely
Doesn’t matter who you drive for and who owns the truck, the Drivers Agenda is the same. If you don’t set funds aside to get home, it’s your fault. -
Yeah it’s a 2019
