English test for drivers.

    First off we all have the right to speak any language we choose. Although I believe a common language is impotent for society. This is not a thread on that.

    The question is. Should there be a test on Basic English in order to get your license?

    I would like to see a test that covers the types of signs you will see on the road. The test would be given to all drivers commercial and noncommercial alike. Can you understand standard signage or not. Simple.

    After what happened on I-70 I think this is a good time to address this issue. As a recent legal immigrant the driver may not have been able to read the warning signs and there are people getting out of high school without a basic understanding of our own language.

    Well, yeah in an ideal world, but these crybabies will scream discrimination, and in this world today( what telephone prompt doesn't include "por espanol, something ocho") they'll get it. And what will they teach them? I really don't think that's going to help anyone here, if anything, make things worse. There are responsible drivers that don't speak English, who is going to take THEIR place? The no English thing, had little, if anything to do with the crash.

    not only basic English. IQ test must be done too. if it's lower than 90 scores , no CDL!

    If you had a higher IQ you wouldn't be in a truck earning lousy money with no home time, you would have a decent college degree and be a software engineer or something similar earning great money with no home time...

    Not necessarily true. Former software engineer here, last tested iq in high school was 152. Left programming field became an EMT because I hated being in an office and dealing with a bunch of leftist politics. Got hurt as an EMT after 9 years couldn't do that anymore so I became a trucker. Now I own 2 trucks, with 3 drivers making more money than I did as an engineer and couldn't be happier.

    A score between 90 and 110 points on an intelligence scale is described as an average IQ. or you want to see brainless idiots wheel holders on roads?

    Scores below 85 are often classified in the following way:

    • 1 to 24—Profound mental disability
    • 25 to 39—Severe mental disability
    • 40 to 54—Moderate mental disability
    • 55 to 69—Mild mental disability
    • 70 to 79—Borderline mental disability
    • 80 to 89—Low average

    It isn't strictly true, I was just trying to suggest that an IQ test would somewhat limit the pool of available drivers. It certainly wouldn't cut down on accidents and bad driving.

    Really? How do you know that? Seems it may have had a lot to do with it, when the driver skipped past that emergency ramp and disregarded all the warning signs for speed.
