I've been out of trucking for 20 years. I didn't renew my CDL 15 years ago, as I thought I wouldn't be using it again. Now, I want to get back in to trucking. Do I have to go back through truck driver training again?

Yes. If you do not possess a CDL.
Your STATE may have a special path for you.
For example in Arkansas if I can find a combination vehicle with airbrakes of any size I can test for CDL A for 50 dollars and Birth Certificate and written tests along with vision etc. (Medical does not apply to me because of Tier two which would be signed as part of test.) Im already grandfathered. I have not held a CDL for a few years due to medical issues vs penalties etc. (Medicines create DUI if I am caught driving.)
If you hold a CDL A or B now in your pocket double check with DMV (Revenuer) to see if it's valid, states have a habit of downgrading licenses to basic car licenses now without a Medical DOT card if you did not sign a tier two.
If you are told you need to do everything all over again, then that is what you will have to do. Off to refresher school you go.bayoustate Thanks this. -

If I had been out for 20 years, and IF trucking is anything remotely like what I read on here in the lower 48 now, I would think long and hard before considering getting back into it, myself. lol

Yes, Sir. Thank you for your reply. Once I get my CDL back, I want to get back in to Flatbedding.

Ive already made the decision to stay out of certainly after 2023. There is a large database related to drug tests. I am not a drug user, but I am prescribed medicines that will absolutely have to be stopped a year before I get into this down here. Im also seeing a number of other nicky picky things that do not suit me personally and I feel like the Brethren did in the 1992 time period when CDL's were forced upon the 400,000 or so older drivers who simply quit the industry and reverted to car licenses and went home. Creating a huge hiring for me despite my stack of tickets then which would have otherwise not gotten me hired anywhere today. (If I had them)
I am content to stay out. But I'll die a trucker. Life is relatively simple right now and that's the way I like it.buddyd157 and bayoustate Thank this. -
