I'm currently near St Louis and came up from the southwest. I've never seen so many dead armadillos in my life. There is one every couple of miles. Must be mating season or something. Saw a dead elk near Flagstaff a couple days ago. Those suckers are huge.

  6. I didn't know I was supposed to keep count. I hit one deer while driving a box truck. The headlight assembly was popped out but I just popped it back in. Other than that, not a scratch on the truck...the deer was killed outright.

I hit a black snake in Oklahoma. Felt bad about that. I thought it was just tire rubber on the road and didn't see it was a snake until it was too late. And the bugs...who can COUNT the bugs? Somebody set up beehives near a highway and every time I drive by there, I kill bees. I thought...what a crazy place to set up beehives. I guess the losses to the bees from trucks make no difference to the hive, in the long run.

I wish somebody would invent something that puts a buffer of air all around a truck, so the bugs are deflected instead of killed. I don't care about stuff like flies, but the "pollinators."

Here is a thing I do to make up for killing animals unintentionally:

I obtain "nautilus" sea shells, whether cheaply at rummage sales or at the souvenir shops along the Gulf Coast or I save them up when I eat periwinkles from seafood stores...I toss those shells into the ocean for hermit crabs to make a home. It always gives me a nice feeling. It's fun for kids, too. When I'm with my girlfriend and her child, we let the child toss the shells. We say we are going to visit the "hermit kingdom" and give them some new homes. Wholesome fun.

I also "Green Book Compost" my chicken bones, which helps the earth. I recycle when I can, though it's shocking how seldom one has the opportunity on the road in most states.

My point of view...don't revel in killing anything that doesn't need killing. Ask yourself how, in your smallest actions, you can make the world a slightly better place for everybody...including the animals.

OK, I have only once in my life seen this, but I got into what I was told was mormon crickets, for maybe 40 or 50 miles the road was covered solid with them, fat grasshopper looking things out in Nevada. It looked as if the pavement itself was moving, and I literally had meat covering the underside of my truck and trailer.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

Sounds like locusts as in the great plague in the bible. That would suck.

How many points is a squirrel worth? I think one got me today.
(I'll never admit to hitting something, even if something hits me... or runs under my truck and goes squish.)

That little critter was running full speed up until it ran under me. I don't know what happened then, but I didn't hear a pop.
I think it was trying to pop one of my tires.
