My insurance rates were never mentioned between van and flatbed, I did however have to add some insurance for reefer freight. Tanker, depending on what you haul is a whole nother ballgame, hasmat insurance is generally not cheap.

I hired a guy that specialized in trucking to do all my filing, My wife did the most part, kept up with all the mileages and such, but he took care of keeping us up to date and legal for a mear 20 bucks a month per truck. After the initial fee, and would renew everything every year as needed. Bucks well spent.

Referall, I will say I was his last customer, he had all he wanted and by the time any started dropping off, he was ready to slow down himself.
If you file for your own authority, you will be getting numerous calls daily from companies that sound like they are the dot themselves offering you their service, these calls will last indefinately it seems like.

I got my authority thru a company that charged me about $1000 to do it. Only for the Secretary of State to tell me they could have set me up with everything for free. I live in Illinois though. You may want to check into your states commercial vehicle department to see if they can help first.

YOU need to deside if you are going to run out of state or in state first. In Illinois if you have an apportioned plate and run over 50% in Illinois miles, your registration is considerably higher each year then if 50% of your yearly miles are out of state. Hope that makes since.
Your insurance cost will be higher the first year or two till you prove to them you are a safe driver.

My guy did not charge anywhere near a thousand bucks, but it was some years ago too. Iirc it was more like 300. I could have done it for free, but have you ever dealt with the commercial division of dmv in New Mexico, even with him setting it up I had to drive to Sante Fe every year to relicense the trucks and it was a total cluster. He was also able to fast trac the insurance filings to get me on the road quicker.
