Bendix AD-9 dump valve seems to get stuck on.

    20190511_201600.jpg So I just bought a 2007 International 9400i, with Cat C15, 10-speed. 1.25m miles. $12,800. I expect things to break on this and just one day later it had.

    My air dryer (Bendix AD-9) is leaking air. Or more specifically, the dump valve seems to get stuck in the open position. I tried jamming a screwdriver into it to close it, and that worked, for about 30 miles. Stopped at a truck stop, mechanic landed me a ratchet and a 10mm socket. This is why I say it seems to get stuck open, because as soon as I turn it, it pops right back in.

    Looks like I do have a tiny air leak somewhere. Lost about 10psi in half hour. Maybe related?

    Any suggestions? This is my first truck and my mechanical experience with trucks is somewhat limited but I'm willing to get my hands dirty.

    Also, wtf is that line hanging to the left of center in the pic? Is that the issue? What is it anyway?

    10 pounds in a half hour is not the end of the world- but here are a few tips for you just starting out-

    get yourself a spray bottle and fill it with soapy water- not too soapy.

    get dirty, spray everywhere you see fittings-(air bags-suspension valves- brake valves-brake hoses- foot valve- junction valves and tractor protection valve....you'll find the leak when you see bubbles appear once you spray those items

    I would add .... That air dryer appears to be ancient. It would be wise to replace the filter cartridge, if not the whole thing sooner rather than later.

    yeah,Get yourself a new dryer- Theyre Cheap These days- Bout $150 Bucks,But you gotta give em your old one.

    Is that really the cause of it? I mean I drove trucks that had way worse air leaks than that and they didn't have air dumping like that.

    I will replace the air dryer, along with many other parts. But I'm a little tight on cash right now. Still have to get those apportioned plates for the truck, otherwise I can't make money.

    But what about line just hanging off there? What is that?

    Just to be clear, I did the same thing, bought an older truck as my 1st, and I ended up doing everything, BUT engine and tranny work. It's the trade-off for paying the outrageous payments of a new truck( and STILL have problems) I think you are doing it the right way, as long as you can work on it, otherwise, it's foolish to buy an older truck. Service rates will kill you. Then you aren't gaining anything and may as well go with a new one for resale.

    If you're tight on cash you can replace just the purge valve. It's about 50 bucks

    I see the line in first pic but last 2 are red x's here. Follow the hanging line and see where it ends.
    As far as the "dump valve" leaking, how about a picture of it. Sounds like it could be the safety valve.I would agree with a new dryer but you could take safety valve out and plug it till you get up and going and cash flowing.
