Rabby pleas do not advise what you don't know how to. Ford and 53 trailer axle isn't same.
Proper bearing and nuts torquing are critical procedure for safety and tire life.
Refer to manufacturer web page to set bearings and nuts. The axle treads are different and after initial 3 times 300 feet X pound torquing it could be 100FP and 1/6 or 1/8 or 1/4 back. Or 50FP and 1/6 or 1/8 or 1/4 or1/2.
    Internet is free.

I was just describing the basic concept of how it worked but naturally I would recommend following proper torque procedures for the specific application.
The original poster appeared to have no idea how it worked and no idea what prevented it from loosening so I merely described how it functioned. Regardless of the application they all function the same way albeit with different torque specifications. The concept is virtually identical

İ can remember when, the inner nut has a pin sticking out of it, when it is adjusted to the proper torque(years ago,it was a feel), the washer with the holes, also has a notch that fits into the spindle, is placed so it keeps the nut from turning(like Pedigreed said), then the smaller nut locks everything in place, voila, you're hub and bearings are secure for another 100k or so miles. Wish I had a dollar for every one I've installed, I wouldn't be rich, but I'd have enough for dinner and a movie, lol.

The simple answer to the question is you tighten down the outside nut as tight as you can and that is what keeps it from coming off . Just a simple double nut system not magic .
