No, please, just stop...
you will not buy a good used truck and dip it in chrome and run it "part-time" or any other variation of just to make a few extra dollars...
I have heard this for literally years... to the point it its worse than simply not funny.
I dont care if its hot shot or the full-on hazmat, over dimension, over weight, specialized, freight box... whatever...
This is a competitive dedicated living. Its full time work. There is no part-time (period).
Some guys do get more time off than others waiting on their next gig, and when the call comes they roll.
I dont know if its a pipe-dream or a stuffed 401k that puts the notion out to the universe that you can buy a $30k-$165k rig and leave it sit unused.
You do understand the overhead expenses beyond the truck dont you?
Plates, tags, ungodly insurance cost...?
That stuff keeps dribbling dollars rolling, sitting, vacationing, and yes, even when you are sick... yes, even when you are gravely ill or a family member has passed away.
The reality here is dont be naive and think there are guys running their guts out to make ends meet but you will come in a part-time it for a few extra dollars.
If you can... please show me... because i would really like to have a part time job a few days every other week when the weather is good so i could have a few extra dollars too.
Most guys here are working 50-80 hours a week. Some are doing more in 8 day stretches while gone from home for a month or more... they want to know also...
If you jump in to run... and make a living...
Welcome... to the brotherhood.
But seriously... part-time owner operator?
Yeah... we call that uber or puzza delivery. Not trucking...
RANT OFF... continue on gentleman and ladies.

No rookie here, but I have never had to work full time owning a truck, and sure don't want any program that requires me too.
Now that is not to say that I treat it as a part time gig, but I would hate to know that I couldn't work a week a month and pay my bills either.
I kind of take that back, I can not do that running my log truck. I really treat it as more of a hobby, just not enough money in it to be serious trucking, but I like doing it, which is goofy. lolim6under Thanks this. -
I only worked 3 days this week. 3 and half last week
Is that full time or part time?Opus Thanks this. -
Well it must be part time, cuz I worked 4 1/2 days last week, but then again just a day and a half each for the two weeks prior, and none so far this week, but I did take a load for tonight, so a day and a half this week too.
I actually told them no on my second load last week, then turned around and let them talk me into a third one, which they know I never want, but they were in a bind.im6under Thanks this. -
I work with a guy occasionally that married a girl with family money, her family bought them a house and when he couldn't keep a job they bought him a Peterbilt so he could be "self employed".
He starts late, quits early and constantly takes time off; he has ALL of his service done at the dealer.
When his bills for repairs, insurance, plates and authorities get so far behind his wife's family cuts him a check to get square again; he doesn't understand why I work so many hours.Lepton1, x1Heavy, Midwest Trucker and 3 others Thank this. -

What can u expect from these guys, they go from sitting on their ### at the mega carriers getting their hands held and babied . when they break a nail they call the breakdown hotline.. They see the ###### chromed out petercars and kwhoppers pulling a bad trailer to match and they want a piece of the pie, what they dont see is that man driving them trucks got 30 years of blood sweat and money into that rig and hes still bustin ### day in and day out....these companies advertising lease purchase own ur truck make 100k a year .. The same companies that train these ppl they market truck ownership to them like its a easy game.. Its a huge problem and a scam , they dont realize it til they dead broke and homeless then they go to another company and do the same , they go broke there and think im gonna get my own truck.. Its a never ending cycle of failure... I been a company driver my whole trucking career, i would love to get my own rig but id hate to pay the friggin bills on it, these new trucks spend more time in the shop then they do on the road , idk how some of yall do it, id have a heart attack.. Yall be safe out there and keep them loud pipes singin the good song

I consider myself fortunate to have been a company driver.
Even more so when some of the fleets Ive run for has provided not only the money and motivation to get that load delivered but made it fun from time to time.im6under and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Since trucking is such an outside or inside industry there are a ton of new people who walk into it with zero understanding of anything that isn't from TV/movie or common knowledge among the car drivers who have seen a truck on the road.im6under Thanks this.
