Yeah not too worried about the road life. Superior is definitely on my short list as well. You're on a good pace income wise! I really appreciate all the info, I'm sitting in CDL class, doing the required book work, pretty boring, looking forward to getting behind the wheel & doing some real training.

I'm thinking about applying at the exact location you're in (Markham). Do I need to have my Hazmat and Tanker endorsements before applying? Or do they give you a certain amount of time to obtain?

I spoke with the Terminal Manager for Superior Pasadena, TX location. Told me to send him my school transcripts (I just finished 30 days ago). He also said that I would need to relocate within 75 miles of the terminal. I live in San Antonio which is about 220 miles away. I really would like superior to be my first company.I also do not mind staying out longer, especially for my first six months. I've done tons of research and they're exactly what I'm looking for in a company.I hate to lose out on this opportunity.

Do you think the terminal manager would make an exception?

I'm in the same position pretty much KENNE1982, just about to test out and wanting to drive for Superior. I'm outside the hiring area as well, about 2 hours away from the terminal in Florida. I called & spoke to the Terminal Manager who told me that the only time they hire outside of the 50 mile radius is if I was willing to go OTR. I plan on driving over to the terminal with CDL in hand and introducing myself in person, shaking hands and letting them know I'm here and ready to work. Good luck Bro!

Not sure about that. My coworker lives out in Indiana and has to use the terminal near her as her home terminal but most of the work she gets comes out of Markham (Chicago). She doesn't get our perks in pay, though, as they don't apply to her terminal (we get pay for fueling, pre/post trip ,etc and she doesn't). The rules must be strict for residency requirements.

Now, a friend from orientation works at Carry Transit, our food grade division, and he says that's not the case for his terminal in Ohio. He is getting tons of miles and while the pay is a bit less than chemical he is making more because he is moving! Maybe check and see if there is a Carry terminal around if you're interested. (I'm considering a move when I relocate to Florida)

It may depend on division and needs of the terminal.

Okay, that makes sense. I think I will take your advice and drive up there. Introduce myself and make that human connection in person. How long will you be out at a time? I just got through emailing all of my documents to the terminal manger. Need for my hazmat BI to hurry up and come back. It’s been 3 weeks.

I didn’t even think to look into Carry Transit. I’m gonna do that now. Thanks Patsy!

Yeah good idea, and the manager can explain or maybe see your interest and make a judgement call. I'm still only 5.5 months solo so not sure of all our ways. But I know an eager driver is what they want. I don't turn anything down and run hard and heard rumors from my trainers that they (dispatch/term mgr) think I'm doing a great job so trying to keep that going. Another guy who started right after is having a rough go of it. I don't think he is managing his time well and runs out of time and gets stuck places so they've given him crappy runs and mandatory days off. I don't like to waste any time, I drive at night almost daily and don't need naps (a lot of our newer drivers stop 2 hrs in for a 2 hr nap??). When my break is up I roll a minute later. I like to run but also like to get home. As most of the stuff out of Chicago is out and back I'm always turning around quickly for another run and/or time off

And definitely try Carry!! I'm tempted to make the switch but our dispatcher is awesome so I'm gonna stick it out at least a year. But some days....air off in full PPE in the blazing sun. Phew...it will test you for sure!

I always prefer doing business face to face, it definitely makes a difference in the outcome. It's easy to just yeah yeah yeah someone on the phone. I'm thinking I'll stay out 2-3 weeks at a time, I like to go go go so they'll probably love me as well. I'm coming from the maritime industry so I'm used to being away from home for 120 days, I believe I can do 2-3 weeks or more with no problems. I appreciate all the great information and perspectives I get here in this forum, everyone is so helpful!
