First noise ticket I ever got was running Thrush mufflers bolted directly off the headers of my built 440 in my 69 Roadrunner when I was a kid back in 1980.
Fast forward 30 years and I go to launch the boat in my Avatar with a heavy cammed 383 SBC and open Marine Headers.
Fired it up on the trailer getting ready to take it out on its first spin in 20 years up walked the DNR guy in Florida and says you have 2 choices . Put it back on the trailer or I write you a ticket.
Last thing I would ever want to do is draw the attention of the DOT or some Podunk cop in some of these little one horse towns we run through.
I still Love the sound of loud exhaust for brief moments but no way I want to listen to it Drone in the background over my 1200 watt stereo as I rock to the Best of the Best of the Hits by Donny and Marie.
And they Called it Puppy Love........................
Loud exhaust

Thanks for the memories. I had those on 1968 Plymouth Barracuda fastback with a 383 with a 4 speed.wore out and tommymonza Thank this.
-
Had these to be exact.
wore out, Oxbow and tommymonza Thank this. -
Loved working on those old big block mopars. I was constantly pulling heads and messing with my intakes.
I would get up at 4 and change out a head gasket and have it together in time to get to school by. 8.
Worst part was getting the starter and the header positioned on the drivers side which was a 3 handed job since they didn't fit if you bolted either one before the other.
And the drivers side I consistently had head gasket problems.
Block needed to be decked.
Loved those old barracudas. Buddy had one with a old 392 hemi or wedge if I remember Million beers ago.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
I thought noise was cool when I was kid.
Had a 65 GTO with Thrush mufflers when I was 19, vroom vroom!
The next year I drove a Ford LTL 9000 day cab with an 8V71 and a clapped out muffler on a 2600 mile round trip, weight maxed out in both directions with a lot of steep hills along the way.
At the end of the first day I had such a buzzing in my head, when I got out of the truck I had to hold onto the door for a few seconds to keep my balance.
I left the loud and proud crowd when I went for a ride in a buddies sleeper, a real quiet and docile looking 62 Dodge B body Dart and joined the quiet and inconspicuous crowd, less chrome, less noise, less trouble, fewer tickets.
You could here the cam lumping away, but your first thought would not be 498 cid stroker engine.
Mopar fans might remember the famous Silver Bullet GTX, King of Woodward Ave, owned by Jimmy Addison, funded by Chrysler, had 4 Cadillac mufflers tucked underneath to reduce restriction and not to draw attention to it, not loud, but it still sounds real snotty.
Last car I played with was a 63 Dodge Polara B body with a 452 cid big block, low 12's in street trim, steel wheels, dog dish hubcaps.
Had an argument with the muffler shop over the mufflers I wanted, low restriction and quiet.
He kept pushing loud at me, I finally said show me the quietest mufflers you have.
He says, these make more hp, I say this is a street car, makes more torque with restriction, better on street, not going to need the hp until I'm at the track on the top end, besides you're installing Y pipes behind the headers, 6 wing nuts and 2 minutes later I have unrestricted exhaust.
He says don't you want your car to sound real tough, I say no, the car is already tough, loud pipes aren't going to make any less tough.
He finally gave in and put the quieter mufflers on.
When I left the shop and stomped on it I could see him pumping his arm in my mirror, he was impressed, even though it was quieter than he preferred.Oxbow and tommymonza Thank this. -
Been working on a 1998 ford tractor with a sleeper.
The truck uses a 3406E which is straight piped. (Has been straight piped
long before I’ve joined the company)
Right now I’m replacing the exhaust pipes as they were rotted out.
The chrome is shot. So I painted them BBQ Black with a chrome heat shield.
The exhaust are loud and the Jake are explosive. And I’m a deaf driver.
But as long as I’ve driven it, it’s had holes through out the system which probably amplified the sound more and maybe crappier.
Hopefully it’ll sound smoother
I’ve wondered which model cat engines have the noisiest Jake brakes.
The E model we have is the only one straight piped.
We have several B models and a 2 turbo C15.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Out of all the cats the single turbo electronic cats have the loudest Jake's.
B models aren't bad at all and accerts have 2 turbos that act as great mufflers.
If you like loud Jake's you should hear my 14L ddec4 with big borgwarner turbo. It will win the Nobel prize in that department for sure!!spsauerland Thanks this. -
Swaan;
I would sure love to hear your Jake going with a load on! -
Anybody remember the 2stroke Detroit jakes??
-
I may not have heard the 2 stroke jakes on these engines yet but I’ve sure heard them screaming away across town grinding corn and blowing up the silo from my house.
My farm buddy rented a Detroit 6v53 to run the grinder.
