Licence Plate Question - owner operator:

Hi - so I want to move to another company - the issue is the PLATE - they cost like 1600
per year - I am paid up at my current company with like 5 months to go.

I want to move to another company - and probably get my own plate for my truck -
can you get 6 months - or must you buy 12 months?

What is your Suggestion - if you want to move to another company as far as a
licence plate is concerned - how do you work this?

Who owns your current plates? If you own them, you can keep same one. Just need to update DOT responsible for safety.

It depends what state. Illinois all renew April 1, so you pay prorated for registering after that. Other states may be 12 months, and the renewal date goes after each client.

So here is a couple solutions ...

Buy your own plate .... $1600 should be in your pocket as an owner.

Find your next company with the same type of program, park the truck until they send you a new plate at the new company.

After discussing this issue with a couple o/o the other day, I am starting to think that carriers should not be allowed to purchasing plates for owners.

    AlexanderK Thanks this.

You’ll need a lease and subsequent liability insurance to buy your own plate. So you can’t quit, buy your plate and then lease on with someone new. You either have to buy your plate while leased on to current or after you sign lease for the new one. Decent companies will send you a check for unused months ONCE the tag is reissued. If they throw it in a bin and never reissue it, you get nothing. If they’re shady, you get nothing. I’ve done both, run my own while leased and run theirs. I’ve concluded while it’s convenient to run theirs, running my own is both cheaper and more beneficial to me.
If the grass isn’t greener, it’s a lot easier to sign on with another company if you’re not dealing with IRP issues

The way it should be. If the state will prorate it, it's not so bad. If it's like WI, you own the plate for the whole period. You can transfer it to another unit but you own it for the year.
