Hello, I am considering going to school for truck driving, and was wondering will any companies even consider hiring me with a "Other than honorable" discharge from the Army? to make a long story short... I deserted in 2001 like a ###### and was arrested by local police in 2003 and released because the military would not come pick me up from the jail. So, after just being released from jail, I got my name ran again in 2007 by the police and was told the warrant was still active, this time the army actually came and got me. I was taken to Fort Sill in Oklahoma and discharged in Lui of Court Martial, So technically I was never "convicted" I was simply given the option to be kicked out or stay in and risk the outcome of Court Martial. The discharge status I was given was "Other Than Honorable". Which some people is just as bad as a Felony, I have also heard that anything besides "Honoable" or "Medical" discharge is considered a Felony. Does anyone know if I can even get a job with this on my record or if it even shows up on my record?

when i got out of the military in 94 i was released with the same thing 'other than honorable' i have worked ever since. i think that pending on what you do it shouldn't hurt you. but you never can tell. but best of luck to you.

It all depends. Being gone for 2 years for being a desertor during wartime is much worse that someone that just didn't follow an orderand and was dischanged for the convenience of the government. Your story doesn't match either. Is it 2003 or 2007. Sounds to me you did a little time there.
Since I had a part in the hiring process I would look at the didcharged.Last edited by a moderator: Apr 8, 2009

You will be fine..... but, I agree with gashauler.
What was your MOS? -
Just about all employers will ask to see your DD214 LONG form and that will have your reenlistment code on it. I would guess and say yours is RE3 or worse? No company is going to trust you with their equipment if they take the time to check. Just my 2¢.

I was shot down once but I didn't desert. I had about 4,000 hours over that #### S.E. Asia even though it was an incorrect place to be. You may just about guess Re. where my sympathy lies.

Most of the companies I have talked to have frowned at the other than honorable. Stevens said they would take me with the status if I had been discharged for longer than 3 years, and Swift said they really dont care and would take me. Both are not top choices, but I guess I got to start somewhere.
