I am a former employee of old Dominion
Old Dominion used to be a company that I was very proud of that was until I was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2018
That's when old Dominion turned on me like the snakes they are, they are Even trying to take the my unemployment benefits
Now I have no insurance no income all because of old Dominion . I never seen a company go down hill so fast as old Dominion freight line
They make there drivers hall over weight trailers and you better no refuse or complain . They will show you the door
If you have a serious Heath condition they will show the door. They are really a not a company that has any integraty at all
Bottom line they are cold and heartless

I had same problem, not with that company but with USA ways of insuring, spent a few hundred thousand with what the government required to be denied treatment because they said it is all preexisting conditions. Took all records into Medicaid office and had to go that route. Now get treated for anything at a real good price and if I make over a certain amount lose any treatment. And the treatments from when insured was always pills.... it was the food, and diet and lifestyle, changed all that and do not need them pills anymore, them pills only hid the problem.

if you were injured on the job, then workman's comp would take care of you.

but you have a disease that can bankrupt an insurance company which is why they dumped you.

you can try hiring an attorney and see if this is "fired with out cause", and if you win (and you might) that's when the attorney takes a cut, usally about 1/3 rd.....

best of luck, i hope that you can beat the cancer and OD as well..!!!!

The employees with disability act prevents employers from firing you due to a medical reason.
They are not required to continue your health benefits for free but you do have access to COBRA for 18 months after your company benefits cease.
Everyone should understand that your health and welfare is your responsibility and you should purchase long term disability coverage.

Most states are at will employment which means they can make up anything they want to get rid of you. I am still trying to get the asbestos settlement from all the work I did in younger years, all I see is it will be approved the day before I die.

COBRA is not free . It is basically the cost of your company plan without the company paying their portion.

My point is that your healthcare is your responsibility, not your employers.

Employer based healthcare is a benefit provided to you by the company to attract employees. Just like paid vacation.

If your employment ends due to illness it is not the companies fault nor their responsibility to take care of you for the rest of your life.

This is why we should plan ahead while we are healthy and purchase long term disability coverage just like life insurance.

I used to say that I could afford to die but I couldn't afford to get sick. Now I have taken steps to prevent that through long term income replacement as well as Aflac to offset the cost of COBRA and have income as well.

I have a close friend who is going through the same exact thing you are right now.
He, also was driver and had purchased all the relevant insurance coverages.

True, it still doesn't take away the impact of it.

    Best wishes for you...

Hopefully you can give good advice for others to be prepared.

no one thinks about death...but taxes.....and life, and health

burial is expensive. creamation is (i wanna say) half the cost, but it's creeping up there too.

you can buy an urn a nice one for about $200. or take the standard plastic or wooded box that comes with the creamation costs.

there is death insurance policies, but you have to pay all the expenses, THEN file a claim...THEN get x amount of what your policy was for. this is why pre-planing your funeral expeses is important, you are locked into the cost, once you PAY OFF the balance....until you pay off the balance, the priice will increase, forcing you to hurry up and pay off your funeral arrangements....
