Percentage pay pulling tanker, what will it pay?

If you're getting paid percentage, make sure they aren't skimming. If I were to do percentage on a tanker again I would negotiate a minimum per mile pay, lay over pay, and all conclusive unloading pay. The free-time and time getting loaded and unloaded can really waste a lot of time and your making peanuts if you don't have unloading pay at a decent rate. Unloading pay should be a minimum $20.00 an hour after one hour retroactive.

You can haul some really nasty chemicals, and only make .28-.34 cents per mile if you work for a cheap SOB. Try and talk to other drivers and investigate the company carefully.

 

As a lease operator I get a % of demurage. As a company guy I got stop money plus 18 an hour at 3hours plus, 130 not dispatched for 24 hours. 18 an hour after a set time at the tank wash.

 

Was talking to recruiter from Pacific Tank Lines, they have Activity Based Pay, which sounds even more 3-card monte than percentage. "Make 12 hours pay in 9 hours".

 

I've been paid both ways. I only preferred percentage pay because I got used to seeing what loads actually pay. When I became an OO, I already knew which loads were the best paying.

From what I've seen, outside a big city, you're basically worth $20 an hour. It's less down South and more in a big city. OO is a different ballgame.

They can give it to you however they want. Labor costs are their biggest expense, so nobody's going to overpay you. Turnover will cost them if they underpay too.

So you'll make $1k for M-F work, basically. Now the question is "doing what?" I'm not taking average pay to do hairy 4-compartment offloads in a rubber suit in 106 degree weather. If they want to bid on the messy loads, it better pay huge. I'm not letting the sales department take a pat on the back at my expense (looking at you Schneider).

Another possible factor is health insurance. Some guys have expensive health care needs and paid health insurance means a lot to them financially.

 

I'm at qc as a company driver(2 more weeks the switching back to o/o)and they pay certain loads at 27% and 23.25 an hour for demurrage but still not enough for the bs you need. I honestly believe that as a tanker(with experience) less than 1k take home a week is unreasonable and stupid from the driver point of view

That's why it's always some small outfit that does it.
No big legit company pays percentage. None.
I can print out any piece of paper you want

QC is literally "the largest Liquid Bulk Transportation Company in North America" and I was paid percentage almost the entire time I was a company driver.

 

They’re big but not so legit.....

 

Big company with lots of middle manager types......

The terminals don’t work together and never have.... they dump loads to the system drivers that they don’t want.

Some of my experiences. As a hired truck

I was mt at their tank wash/terminal near Philadelphia. And was going home to northern New England. They had a load going 35 miles from my house. I told them that I was going that way anyways and had delivered oil to this customer at my previous job.......

Answer “that’s a dedicated run we got it covered.” You can wait for your trailer to be washed and go from there... My answer it’s Friday at noon I’ll bobtail home and take it from there... (400 miles almost )

Then there’s the deal Dow gets on delay time. It was only like $25 a hour and you only got your 60% of it.....

Or the cost of tank wash’s that they would deduct off the top of the freight bill. End result I payed 60% of the tank wash for their trailer... this only happened with certain customers.

Then the time a terminal manager told me he was going to charge me for 400’ of pump hose because I only had 60’ with me and his crap load needed 450’ of hose . I called corporate on that one......
