I think that for something like this that's complicated and where the fines are high it's best to slowly grow into it. I have a 5 axle RGN and I'm now looking for a good deal on 3/4 axle trailer to get into somewhat bigger stuff. Trying to learn by doing but not jumping into something huge right away.

I'm not a big expert on OS. We have two Cozad RGNs but we very seldom haul anything huge or that we haven't hauled before.
The one thing I do know for sure is that OS mistakes are expensive. Always.

ok, how do you get caught? (assuming you have a permit, but something is istaken)? Just on weight stations?

One thing is if you miscalculate and the DOT finds you overweight some, they will strip you of your permit and fine you for overweight like you never purchased a permit. In other words, all weight over legal.
One truck moving across Virginia was about 140k gross and they saw 2k over on one axle. He was hit with a $60k overweight ticket. Fighting in court. Don't know the status.

That’s a fact, Virginia is really bad. I think it was @Rontonio that posted the link to the truck (ATS maybe?) that had like a $60,000 fine in Virginia, @Humblepie got nailed there too. The other thing they do (not just Virginia) is reduce your dimensions to legal if they want to be jerks just to tack on fines. I swear they do it here to have something to plea bargain down.
