Rideandrepair and Slowmover1 Thank this.

Well that clears it up!!! Lol I know very little about CB radios. I do know what I’ve been told by more than 1 Volvo Owner. Maybe You should give it a try. What have you got to lose? All things have technical definitions and also real life in the field, results.

Craig, seriously rethink the dipole thing.

Well I have written before what is what, so a quick explanation is this ....
The signal is made up of two parts, both of them needs an equal radiator.
A dipole has both of the needed equal radiator ... a balanced antenna,
Reflection of the signal takes place by the earth, and when there is a poor reflection, a counterpoise is used to help a dipole with that reflection.
In a mobile application, there is a more complex relationship with the earth, a creation of capacitance between the vehicle and the earth, but there is a need to have a balanced system ... call it an rf ground ... and it is something that can be achieved and you know how that's done. Once there is an rf ground established that is an equal to the radiator - antenna - then the system is balance and then efficiently is maxed out.
The ground plane thing is a reflective - directional - thing for the signal.
Any of that makes sense? -

It isn’t earth ground ... it is earth.
Think of a mobile like a magnet mount, there is a capacitance created by the base of the antenna and the vehicle, so the vehicle is the same thing to the earth. -
