Yeah think about it as a beam antenna.
No that's wrong.
When you use a dipole (doesn't matter if it is vertical or horizontal), it is a complete system as i described, two parts of the signal are being radiated. The reflection of the signal has little to do with the actual rf ground, there is a need to balance the system and the dipole does that.
I thought I explained this before?
Here is a thought, take a look at what a balanced and unbalanced feed line is all about.
