Truly I think that is more of a question for a lawyer than dot!! If you the mechanic, driver, and owner!! God forbid you get in a accident and brakes are involved!! If I had a shop I’d probably be in the same situation though

Back when the mountains had a song in the morning for the wonderful blessings we are about ... ok, a long time ago I forget exactly what year.

We recieved word that fuel will be dyed three colors and reefer fuel be seperate fuel receipts without motor road tax and so forth. For oh... a song or three over that year there was chaos as dippers ran around hunting all that Revenuer coloring inside them there big tanks of our'n.

I think Dear Uncle Sam in his... ancient slow comprehension was paying 20 dollar bills a hour to inspectors to chase 25 cents tax on buck something of deisel back then. Im not sure. It would have had to have been back in the 80's during my early time.

Strictly speaking you can't do that unless you are a certified mechanic.
Now if a certified mechanic signs off on it then yes.

You as an owner can work on your own truck.

There is no law stating it has to be done by a certified mechanic.

To be exact, the only thing you need a certification in is inspecting the brakes for vehicles YOU DON'T OWN or drive.

49 CFR Part 396.19 - is about the certification process.

That is if you want to be certified.
But yes an OO is allowed to work on his own truck, but I find it hard to believe he can certify them without certification of some sort.

    Rideandrepair and x1Heavy Thank this.

What are you talking about when you say certify them???
brakes do not have to be certified/
Now if an inspector shuts you down, he may have to reinspect if you fix them your self.

    Joetro and Rideandrepair Thank this.

Certified to be safe. Can an OO or even a company man do his own safety? If he is certified ie holds a certificate of some kind yes. A brake adjustment card does not qualify.
He may be qualified but not certified for example.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

They may have changed this, but it used to be right in the regs that anyone who had worked as a mechanic for a period of 6 months, iirc could do an annual inspection. It used to be also that an oo or company could do their own, it seems like the law changed at some point on this, but I still do my own and have never had it questioned.
