Auxiliary Power Unit. A small motor behind the fuel tank on the frame behind or below your sleeper.

Owners never put them on until oh... 8 years ago. Deemed them TOO FANCY in the words of one long gone Owner back in the 80's It did not matter to him one whit that you burn 4 dollars fuel per night with it instead of two to three times that in gallons.

I used a standard 12 volt camping type fridge. It was strictly 40 degrees below whatever the cab was more or less temporary storage (No more than 72 hours) of ready foods for meals. And milk etc.

 

Overnight is fine (10 hours or so)... any more than that and you are risking the truck not starting.

If the truck is equipped with a working APU, you can leave the truck engine off as long as you like.

 

I have a dorm room refrigerator with the microwave mount to the top (like the ones in motels) i only unplug it if I go home, if I'm on a 34 it stay plugged in with no problem.

 

Your inverter needs to be large enough for a household dorm type fridge to start the compressor. I found 1800 watt was large enough. 1500 might do it. I know 1000 watt is not enough.
I have a 2500 watt pure sine wave inverter now.

 

I have the 2500 watt from harbor freight a year and a half its still going strong

 

A walmart fridge will be the cheapest way to go. Usually under $150. Plenty of listings on Walmart.com.
Otherwise a true truckers cooler that will stand up to the use will run you around $800
It is your choice. Personally I would get a dorm fridge from Walmart

 

I hope you have those refrigerators bolted down.
You get in a wreck they will go all over the place.
