"Highland Transport currently employs about 120 owner-operators and 30 drivers. TFI says that it will try to find other jobs for the laid off employees within the company. TFI operates about 16,000 trucks across the country."
-
The employees may be covered but what about the owner-operators?
-
company may not "owe" anything to the o/o's......other than a paycheck, maybe insurance at reduced prices, other than that, o/o's are pretty much on thier own...like they should be.
-
Depends on the conditions of the contracts that were signed.
-
i haven't ever really heard of any company with o/o's, too worried about them, over employee's.
i'd be interested in seeing a contract that states if the company goes out of business, they will take care of them (the o/o's) like they were employee's. -
Seeing as how this was a subsidiary of a larger company I’m sure there might a clause in the contract.
-
might be, could be, but in my opinion, the employee's should be taken care of first and foremost. at least there are other divisions to transfer to, unlike when a former employer of mine recently closed up (NEMF) ALL divisions were closed up, so no transfers could happen.
they had o/o's when i had worked there, and maybe because it was a union shop, when things were slow, the o/o's were told to stay home, and why not.>??
on o/o is gonna work over me a company driver?
you had beter believe i griped anytime i saw an o/o working over a company driver when we were slow, i'd make sure the union rep got into that dog fight.
BS, they got the truck, go look for another company to haul for, that's why some own thier own trucks, they don;t wanna "work for da man".........and be "thier own boss"......FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
Yup. It’s a dog eat dog world.
-
which is why i never really liked working for a company that had o/o's as well as company drivers. i believe it should be "one or the other"...not both.
but that was a union shop, paid me well, and i did as well as i could while i was there, and i'd push the "union shop" rules any chance i got, when there wasn't enough work for us guys, and the o/o's would cry they had bills to pay as well.....
what ended up happening (at my shop) was one o/o retired, another sold his truck and came to work for us, then the other o/o sold his truck and also came to work for us.
and they could not dove tail or bump any of us guys for senority.....
