I hope I make it, but it's 2000 miles until I get there, and a lot of mountains.

I thought about JB, but when wrench said the dried coolant actually works as a sealant, don't wanna do it more harm than good.

Have tools, no impact. I think I can get it done if need be.

Nah. Still think I can git-r-done. Much rather let wrench do it.

That plastic is really tough, I think you'll make it fine without touching it. On mine I had to take a soldering iron and melt the plastic from a portion in front of the metal insert so I could pry it off leaving the bolt in.

I just had to remove it to get to the fan clutch. I'm sure I looked at the insert once the tank was removed and decided that replacing the radiator was the only real remedy.

Another possibility, is that, I accomplished what I had set out to do and figured, meh; it still works. Seriously, I can't remember exactly what I was thinking (2 years ago.)

Remove and replace on the coolant tank is fairly easy. Big problem is finding a way to catch the coolant.
A siphon hose and a few empty coolant jugs could work. I think you could do the job. Think about the OM and how you saved them some cash. They’ll be bragging on it.
