Well sir, First off if you want to do it, go for it. But dont think its all easy. Alot of people get into trucking because they think, whats so hard about driving? Its good you like to travel, but when your trucking its not just a road trip, you have places to be, and people to please. When you do get home you sleep the first day, and wash up, and pack up the second, that truck will be your life! WHen your not driving it, you will be dreaming about it, lol, not to be all gloom but it isnt easy, you have to be content with the lifestyle, its why so many drivers swap jobs so often, their not happy with the job. Just check out some of the adds from trucking co. trying to recruit drivers and see what it says about home time.(Its in bigger letters than the pay!) But I say go for it, who knows, You might just love it!
ElliottNess Thanks this. -

Look into expediting . You're in a prime area for it and they don't require the experience the big OTR carriers do and you're treated a lot better . Several members here got hire by an expedite fleet owner as soon as they got out of school .ElliottNess Thanks this.

Big thanks to all of you. Ive learned so much just from your advice and pointers. One more question. How much should I save up before I fully commit myself?
-
Well, you may be one of the un-lucky ones and it's just in your blood. In which case you'll love it and there is no turning back. I have a culinary degree and a business degree, but I'm driving a truck.
But seriously, think about a few things, like being alone for hours maybe days with only the CB for company, being away from your family for days or weeks, sometimes good sometimes bad food, dispatches want you to one thing, DOT another and shippers/receivers another. Looooong work days then sitting for days waiting for something. Commonly referred to as hurry up and wait!
I have lost 2 god marriages driving a truck.
If you can get past that, or you can't think of doing anything else well you might have the fever, in which case I don't believe even shock therapy will help, go for it!
Don't get me wrong, I've been doing it over 27 years now and I still love it. But it's a lot rougher then people think, my sister said, oh how hard can it be? She rode with me one time and said, WOW, I'll never say that again!
And I've seen what most people only read about. And quite a few things I can't explain!
So, just be careful and think about what you could lose because once you've caught the bug, there is NO turning back!rookietrucker, Baack and ElliottNess Thank this. -
