I'm no authority but I read somewhere that the only real change between the Big Cam and the Small Cam was just that. The outer journal size of the cams. Not because they had a problem with camshaft breakage though.

What I read didn't give a reason why, just that it wasn't breakage.

In theory, having a bigger outer journal can give them a better control of the points of when lift starts and ends and is easier on the rest of the valvetrain because it's a smoother transition from no lift to full force lift against the valve springs. Not as sudden and drastic.
