Correct me if I'm wrong but the cam journal is the part of the cam that rides in the block and a larger " journal" would just give you more area to ride in the bearing which would give you more oil surface. The cam lobe is the part of the cam the lifter or follower rides on and can be ground to any spec. And that's what gives you your lift and duration. So to me it sounds like the difference between a Big And Small cam is just a larger journal and more lube. Did Small cams have a problem with Cam bearings?
Al. Roper, cke, Slowpoke KW and 15 others Thank this. -
The way I understand it. Cummins changed injectors for the big cam and thus changed cam design. It was an effort to lower pollution. Yes even way back then.Al. Roper, cke, Slowpoke KW and 16 others Thank this.

Kinda sounds like the factory took a precautionary measure in anticipation of higher demands on the engine ?cke, Slowpoke KW, Crusader66 and 11 others Thank this.
