Ya know, I use to say the exact same thing KT and then my son happened 13 yrs ago when I was 43 yrs old. Not a day goes by now that I don't thank the good Lord for him. He is by far the best thing that has ever happened to me and as far as I know, my wife too. I've said it before, he is a great young man. He's kind, helpful, protective, honest, has a great sense of humor, curious, athletic, very smart, not afraid to ask questions, he loves me and his mother as much as we do him and he lets us know frequently. He's not perfect, he gets in trouble like any other 13 yr old although maybe not as much. I don't remember the last time I spanked him, it's been years and their hasn't been a need to anyway.
I've come to realize that regardless of whether I wanted kids or not he's here and it's my job to teach him right, at least according to my way of thinking. I take out what I think are the bad parts and insert the good ones. He asks questions and I answer them, (he is exceptionally curious and inquisitive about pretty much everything by the way). If I don't have an answer we look it up together and I explain what I need too to get the point across. We do or have discussed everything you brought up, politics, race, gender.
I don't feel that I need to "spare" him from anything, it's all part of life and always has been, there's been bull sheit since the beginning of time. It's just that it was hidden before or not talked about or people just didn't know, it just hasn't been as prominent as it is today because of the availability to news and social media at our fingertips. Imagine back in the day or even further back if the whole world was able to see what was going on at that time with people, neighbors, politicians, religious leaders. The same thing was going on back then as is going on today.
How many people from past history were gay, men wearing women's clothing, nasty politics, (the Crusades), people that were slaves and weren't black, (Hebrews come to mind), and whatever else isn't what we consider "normal" It's always been there and always will be, it's just up to us parents to protect and teach for now until he leaves home then it's up to him to do what he wants with what he has been taught.
Now I get being a parent isn't for everybody and some people that are parents never should have been. I never wanted to be a parent but I would have missed out on so much. Someday you may hook up with the right gal, and it does take 2 to raise a child imo, and you'll decide differently. I would hope that one day that will happen to you, if not, then kudos to you for realizing it's not what you wanted and you didn't bring an unwanted child into the world just because. I think you have a lot offer and would make a great parent, (hey, your on the internet so it must me true, lol).
I hope this didn't come off as preachy KT because the wasn't the intention, I just don't want you making the mistake I almost did for reasons that aren't in my control. I'm just trying to pass on what could possibly be in your future and thank you for the Fathers day wishes, (after this novel I bet your more careful who you pass on well wishes too, lol).
I feel truly blessed because of my son. Look what I would have been missing.
I would also like to pass on Fathers Day well wishes to all you dads. Have a great day!

Last night I got a call to help and grab a wrecker for a crash. No idea who it is but was told that a 17 year old girl ran a flashing red at 11pm and was t-boned and killed. Just struck me how things can change in an instant. With father's day tomorrow, appreciate all the good things with your kids. You never know when it might be the last time you see them.

12 ounce ribeye, mashed potatoes and fried okra. It's what's for dinner.
Unless you're a picky 7 year old, then it's pizza.
