PUT DOWN ON TRAILER... NOW NEED HELP WITH EQUIPMENT

You dont need 22 4" straps and you dont need any 20ft straps. Get like 3 or 4 extra straps besides however many winches you have.

4" ratchets are nice, but not really needed to start out.

Id say 10 chains and binders.

As far as dunnage, I used to carry like 8 pieces. Hardly ever needed that much. Only time I used more was hauling pipe, then it was 9 pieces. I wouldnt waste time with a dunnage rack, Id just chain them down at the front or rear of the trailer.

Tarps. I hate tarps, but sometimes ya need them. I spend a lot of time thinking about the perfect tarps. My 4fts are nice, my 8ft ones are a pain in the ###. I personally think the 3 piece sets are nice and that's what I want to go with at some point because most of the freight I haul never goes end to end on the deck, and my 24ft tarps overlap a lot. Ive even wondered if I could get a tarp made with heavy duty zippers and have different length sides lol.

Probably missed some things, but those are my thoughts for now.

 

If you havent already bought anything, go to a trailer dealer, or buy it online. Buying most flatbed stuff in a truckstop will be double what those places cost. Sorry if anyone else already gave this advice or if you already knew.

 

Roll of bailing wire comes in handy. Duct tape too..

Claw hammer, & nails..

I also keep some pieces of cardboard, & rubber strips 4"x10" or so to protect straps is areas you can't get the plastic ones in. Another said fire hose which I'm sure is better..

I got some free moving blankets, but others use a roll of felt to protect tarps.

 

Looking at a new sales brochure that napa sent me, it has a claw hammer with an indexing head on it that doubles as a nail bar. It may be junk, but might be a two tool in one type deal too.

 

For the height pole go to home depot and buy a telescoping branch trimmer. Take saw end off and put anything in it's place. Just bolts on. Much cheaper and very sturdy. Use a magic marker and put a simple ruler on side

I would get a 3 piece lumber tarp and 1 steel tarp.

 

I used to strap my dunnage on the braces behind the landing gear on some trailers. I literally hated keeping it on the trailer deck, unless I knew I would need it for the next load.
The last few years I ran otr I quit carrying tarps at all, except for a smoke tarp, I turned down a few loads because of it, but not as many as a guy would think. I was pulling a step too instead of a flat, that made some difference, I'm sure.

 

2 big pressure gauges mounted (on each axle 1)

 

I only ever had one guage, but two would be better .
Ideally a set of electric scales on both truck and trailer, like those on my log truck would be best, but a little spendy. If a guy hauls close to max all the time and has to scale it, they would pay for hem selves in aggravation if nothing else though.

 

I'd skip the claw hammer and get a 2.5 lb hammer and small wrecking bar. I'd get at least 4 regular break-over binders also.
