You're right about the temperature controlled units . They are used in the White Glove division of FedEx Custom Critical and they stay busier than other units .
Also correct to stay away from rail gates . They have too many mechanical problems and take away from door opening width .

I talked to builder who quoted 4K$ for stretch plus the cost of a box (22') 3.5K$ for dry, 5-6K$ reefer (used) dont have a price for new box but I would go with used. Age of the tractor is an issue with some carriers.

$4k seems a little low to me. I'd make sure to see other trucks he's done.

I paid a quality metal shop place $5000 to stretch my Volvo 770. Found a used 22 ft box for $2000 plus 500 to install it. Ran that rig over 200000 miles and got great mileage cause it had the Volvo motor and a 3.41 rear axle ratio. 70 mph was 1500 rpm. Tandems cost us more on the toll roads and bridges, for sure. New truck is just a two axle and our gvw is way less. I am looking to add a lift axle to our new rig to open up more opportunities to haul.
