So my boyfriend had his CDL and drove OTR for 3 years. He had to surrender his license once he got put on insulin. Which was right before they passed the law stating you can drive on insulin. It’s been right around a year since surrendering. He’s telling me he has to go through the whole process again, school and all. Is this true?
How to get CDL back

Yes, it is unfortunate, but once you give the CDL back for whatever reason you do have to go through the process again. Never give it up. If you can't pass a physical get the CDL changed to an intrastate CDL and keep it. Sorry, I wish I could tell you it was easy.brian991219 Thanks this. -
Visit the revenuer (DMV and yes we use the R word here) and if you were Arkansas within 365 days of surrender of CDL A which is other wise valid etc you are allowed to reup back to CDL A after a year due to small grandfathering rules you can pay a fee and take a road test with something that is a tractor trailer, preferably manual and upgrade that way. If you have NOT had a CDL ever in life, then you will be starting all over again as if it never happened.
Be very careful with that Insulin. I don't know what form the kits travel needles and all, but should have a original prescription, label and so on to the Law and prove that you are legit in need of this material to function well in life. Without it or too much of it will put a person into a coma under which there might not be possible to resuscitate. -

for instance i think in Ohio, you can keep your CDL but you check off "not currently using it" or words to that effect.
in my state, to get an intrastate, i'd have to be working as a state employee.like for the state DOT road crews, or a fireman....or utility worker like the electric company......
so even though i have retired and turned in my CDL, there simply were no other options like "some" states might have...
it's all a money grab for many states, to make you jump through all the hoops all over again... -

i agree however, that anyone NOT driving professionally should try to keep his/her CDL up to at least retirement age to avoid the whole process all over again.
some old timers unlike me, wish to keep thier CDL, for what ever thier personal reasons are, like maybe "do a side job" every once in a while.
unlike many others, i have had enough of the road, and the stupid rhetoric in the business, and wished to enjoy my twilight years in resonalble peace and harmony.
it is too bad that the o/p surrendered his, with out really any forethought about the future.
the only thing constant is change..
maybe someday, they will allow quadraplegics to drive, using all robtics..?? -
