If you can do the lane change then the techniques are about the same. Get your trailer started then get the tractor back under it where you can see your cone. Once the trailer tires start into the box crank it hard until the landing gear enters the box. Then crank hard the other way until the tractor is back under the trailer and you should be pretty close.

They have had a parallel park skill for a while that i know of. When did you get your CDL is the answer to that LOL. My buddy got his CDL in 94 and said that was part of his testing too.

thats pretty much the way it goes, like I said before, make your spots on the truck you are using and adjust accordingly, we had a school truck, KW T600, about a 225 inch or so wheel base, 45 foot trailer, pull straight past about 1 1/2 to two foot past the cone, 1 1/2 out from it, don't let it roll on you, hard left turn, keep a eye in the mirror for just the very tip of the landing gear shoe, no more, hold the brake and turn hard right and come back around, if you are close when you get straight w the trailer, you will see the front cone and the third cone on the back wall about 2 1/2 to 3 feet in line with the trailer, keep coming around and you should pick up the end cones with the mirrior, look out the left side, the tandems will be about 2 feet from the edge of the box, worked for me, got it in one shot last Tues.

Have you ever done it in NYC? We had a female instructor in school, who drove for almost 20yrs. She was in NYC daily, and had to parallel park all the time.. When you were having troubles with that maneuver she was the only instructor who could show you how to do it and get it done in one shot..

Not to scare you but the paralel park was my demise when taking the cdl test with schneider in fontana. If you can memorize your set up point because it is hard as hell to judge from your rearview mirror.

Ive never seen a T/Trlr where the back end didn't follow the front end.Same applies in backing except your steering from the rear.
We trained school fish without the use of the big right side mirror, only the lower round one.
They learned to read the right side without looking basically. The left side will tell you everything if you know what to look for and where to look for it.

You have to learn to trust what you can not see, over steer is another thing that is easy to avoid if properly taught.

Proper set-up is the trick to all backing maneuvers,if you have to turn the wheel more then 4 revolutions while backing/correction your OVER STEERING! and failed to set-up properly.

The need for 180* skid docking is virtually none existent these days. Its the only docking manuver requiring more then 4 turns of the wheel.
A Driver is only going to reproduce what a Trainer teaches, good core skills instilled early make life/advancement much easier.
Relearning after graduation is where the vast majority are left.
The use of automatics in entry level training is a HUGE MISTAKE and should never be allowed, but it is.

Seeking perfection before proficiency is futile.

I had to do the same thing in Az, I went just past the last cone with my rear tandems, cranked hard left till I seen just the tip of the Passengers side landing gear support arm, then hard right till I was strait, then backed up in till the cone "the 1st we lined up with" was right about the middle of the 1st set of tractor tandems, hard right till I seen the tip of the drivers side landing gear support arm, then back hard left and right in.

My way sounds long vs some of the others, however that was the only way I was taught.
