Truckers face problems finding a place to park.

GREENWICH -- A Byram man who has been lobbying for 10 years for a crackdown on truckers parking on the shoulders of Interstate 95, believes his efforts may at last be bearing fruit. From a window of his Ritch Avenue West Byram home, John Bowman can see the northbound on-ramp of exit 2 on I-95 and the truckers who would spend the night sleeping in their vehicles.

Connecticut actually has alot of parking, just not down in that area of 95. I just plan ahead and get either north of Fairfield or stay in NJ and head up that way in the morning.

Riley said strong opposition by residents will make it difficult to create any parking spaces for truckers in Fairfeld County. "It would also create an absolute revolution down there to put a truck stop in Fairfield County," he predicted. "Frankly [truckers] are not welcome in Greenwich. They [Greenwich residents] want their arugula delivered but they don't want to see the vehicles that deliver it," he said.

Grrr, a classic NIMBY attitude doesn't help the situation.

Sgt. Chris Johnson, a spokesman for Connecticut State Police, said it's a $75 fine for parking illegally on the shoulder of an interstate highway. "It's not only illegal, it's a safety hazard, as well," he said. That extends to truckers who park their big rigs on the shoulders of on and off ramps at exits, he said. But forcing truckers to move along might create an additional safety hazard, Nursick said. "It's a balancing act," Nursick said. "Do you want them to pull off the road or do you want a trucker who is tired driving [with a hazardous load]," he said.

Connecticut doesn't have a lot of truck stops if memory serve correct; so where are these guys supposed to park to get their 10?

Riley said truckers would like to have better places to park, but said they shouldn't be perceived as the bad guys. "It's not a situation that the trucking industry likes but we bring you guys everything you eat... we try to do it safely, we're not the enemy," Riley said.

He's right. I'm not sure what needs to happen first to improve the situation. I think educating the public so they don't petition for stupid ordnances and laws would be a good start.
