Today, to be honest, it is the LTLs that have the unions. I know UPS and some other private fleets are. My information is VERY old. Last I heard a lot of the LTLs are not doing that well and are not making money. This is not something I see a lot and honestly can't say for sure. I do know that as a percentage of the total union driving jobs are not what they were 20+ years ago. -

No cost medical insurance is almost the equivalent of asking for the moon, virtually unheard of.

Many companies ONLY offer 401(K) plans, if that at all. Employees being offered the 401(K) plans are LUCKY if the employers match employee contributions with 1% to as high as 6%, (often with a cap), providing the companies can both afford it or are feeling generous on their part.

This is an outright case of the employee putting himself or herself into a position of flat out being PRICED OUT OF A JOB.
Many individuals would call this being outright GREEDY.

A couple of years ago I was hauling on a union job, come friday one of the company drivers parked his truck an hour ahead of time, we all ad to park at the same time and ride out with escorts, we were in a secure missile site area. I got into it with him, but like he said he will get paid his 12 hours anyway, but it took 160 bucks out of my day. Tuesday of the next week, they told me they would have to cut back some trucks, since I was the only OO, naturally I was gone BUT he then ask if I would stay and drive one of their trucks. lol Guess who went home, plus his wife that drove another one. lol -
Two thoughts.
Most freight that is moved outside of rail, is moved by non-union companies in a near free market environment. Putting a union into the mix will remove the free market portions of it and replace it with one run by inflation.
Most of these benefits and all of that are in fact paid for by taking more out of the market and allowing inflation to be forced into every load, rates wil go up at the same time so will work slow down drastically and that will kill off more than just the marginal companies.
As for unions themselves, not making this political in any way but when a union promotes foreign interjection in labor markets like the teamsters have done over immigration, it is time to think many of them are really past usefulness.
