Then of course there's this offering From Paccar:
-
I am guessing that is the 13 litter engine that paccar has from DAF which they own? The smaller units are just rebadged cummins. I am interested in just how well that 13 liter engine works.

Thats were the problem all started, if CAT couldn't prefect the engines by production time they should have stepped up to the plate and pulled there engines off the market! They have put the burden on the purchaser or TRUCKER to do the testing for them and assorb the cost of down time and expense. I have been CAT to the bone for 30 years and never have experienced such disapointment. If I didn't have my OLDER trucks in my fleet and was a sole OWNER OPERATOR like in the past, ONE of these trucks could break $ you!! Its my old trucks that are carrying me threw this. I strive to run TOP NOTCH equipment and when my best drivers come to me and want there old trucks back that enlightens that problem even more! This isn't just down time, its driver frustrations, its customer satisfaction of the product delivery ON TIME, and putting that on the drivers back of sitting all day to get your truck running so you can drive all night to be on time, after time, after time, after time, after time! My drivers are sick of it! and so am I!Brickman, 2fuzy and pullingtrucker Thank this.

I feel your pain...
My work just bought a 2009 T800 with a 475 cat and I only put 2500 miles on her and she has been to the KW dealer twice since then.
The first time was at 1400 miles for an emissions recall and the second time was for a check engine light at 1700 miles that the dealer said they found something wrong with a wire, not sure if it was loose or what.
I'M only getting about 4.6 miles per gallon and the BURN light comes on every 100 miles. So far the DPF light has come on at 1400 miles and again at 2100 miles and both times I had to do a parked regen.
Boy and I glad I get paid by the hour... -
The cat08 motors stink once again i sit at the cat dealer in lincoln this time there saying its an exhaust system sensor keeping the system from regenerating what a bunch of garbage this stuff is I would say just about every trip I have issues with it. If it werent for the regen stuff the motor would be great. They supposedly have another recall too do o it after I get back to chicago that will fix it all but will see.
-
hate to hear your having problems but i have a 09 kw with a 08 cat motort in it with 98000 miles on it and have only had one problem with the motor since february when i got it.

The 2008 cat engines are much more reliable than the 2007 models were. If you own an 07 built engine, Cat is getting ready for a major assult to fix their field problems. Rumor is it will be an 8-10 hour update to remove the 07 hardware and install the new parts that are standard on the 2008 products ( and doing a good job). Keep the faith guys, Cat has too much at stake to just walk away from their loyal base of customers, especially the ones who play in the dirt! After all, isn't that their stated future customer profile ?
dieselroarmt875b, SPIKE 64 and Baack Thank this. -
That's the beauty of the Detroit Diesels we're buying today. They still have the independent DDC Distributor network to support the engines...but also the Freightliner dealers that can support it as well. The Detroit Diesel situation is a whole lot different than Volvo, Mack, Navistar, and the upcoming Paccar heavy engine platform.

Last month got another phone call at 2 am. Another 08 cat down 100 miles west of Billings,mt. Driver getting cold, no heat, 20 below. Called peterbilt roadside assisant, got a wrecker on the way. same ol same ol s--t different day. Find out the NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION of the regen head failed. Now found out there is another NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION II that they put on this unit. ASKED, cat if they would put the NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION II on my other 08 and was told not till it fails! I asked so it is cheaper to wait for a failer and my drivers sits in the cold and have to hire a wrecker to drag it in to a shop. Was told NO, it is not really cheaper for Cat but it's the policy!

Well I am sending them both it for there particulate trap clean out this week. We've finally made it to the 250,000 mile marker. I let you folks know what the mileage does after clean out. It been around 4 mpg for the last 180,000 miles.
