She was going for an inside straight. I would have let her draw.

Well guys it is an art on how to use gratuities. You don't walk into the place and say "you can do me a favor" then push an envelope of $50s to them. It is the little things, like remembering who's kid likes trucks and who's kid does soccer and so on.

Most of the time they remember that autographed soccer ball that came to them at christmas time that you picked up for $75 at an estate sale or the tickets for a baseball game, or what ever. It doesn't have to be a lot, just make a connection to what they see and who you are.

Donuts are iffy, I did that once at one agent's location and it turned out that most everyone there was diabetic - bad me, didn't do my homework.

As a driver, I have had to bribe a few forklift drivers to get my truck loaded before others.

This happened at one 'teamsters' dock where they are known to take hours to load a truck, especially longer with impatient drivers. I asked the two forklift drivers to stop what they were doing and load my truck .... "name your price" ... $200 did the trick. I was out of there within 20 minutes of putting the thing in the dock, I wrote that off too but ended up making a lot more money because that load was delivered way way early and I caught another load right there at the receiver's dock which wasn't even called for going back home.

Yes. And when the practice started of extorting drivers it was only $50. And a few loads after you it went to $250. The idea is as old as mankind. Greed. What will you do when the price hits $500? $700?

The only time money exchanged hand at a receiver, in my experience, was when I drove for Swift. I opened the doors and studied the tight back to the dock, when I noticed a few warehouse hands exchanging money and grinning at me.

I walked over and asked, "What's the over under for pull ups?"

    "Three!"

"I'll take that action! $20 on under!"

    I made $80 that morning.

The way I see it, the golden rule applies.
If you're an ### to me, expect to be last.

If you're a nice guy, expect standard/fair/solid service.

If you remember that my kid plays basketball or that I fish or bring soda's for the group and are a nice guy . . . expect to be first.

That's not brownnosing, bribing, or unethical, that's just how life works.
