So I've read through a few threads discussing buying new versus used and whether to trade in at all or keep her till the wheels fall off.
What I'm hoping for is a little advice on when to trade, having already decided to do it.
My wife and I run a 2016 KW T680 (full EGR, etc.) that we bought about a year ago. We bought her used but barely at about 90k miles and we've put a shade over 200k on her since with 293k on the dash as of today.
We do have the 500k engine warranty but that's it as far as extended warranties go.
So, as of right now, we have gotten some good use and definitely earned more than the truck has depreciated but we are at that mileage where long-term maintenance costs start to really kick in.
So, in your expert opinion is it time to trade her in?
When is it time to trade?

Must be a Cummins? Does it have the ISX15? One advantage would be upgrading to the X15 which gets better mileage and seem to be little to no emission issues. Maybe you could upgrade to the endurant 12 sp auto also to improve mpg. To me those two things are the only benefits you would get but are significant.
I would see what you could get for it. My guess is it’ll make more sense to run out to 500k and trade on a brand new one. Used truck prices are in the toilet. They are trying to keep them up but not much is selling.
If you are putting 200k per year on it then plan on 1 more year and order your new one here in about 8 months.Rideandrepair and Fairweather Thank this. -
IDK, I'm driving a 2000 FLD with 1.6m on the C12 with no overhaul. I'm averaging 7.2mpg, and the $2500/month I'm saving on truck payments will go a long way towards paying my bills if it needs to go in the shop for repairs...

You need to have bumper to bumper. I"m not sure on KW but the FL's I drove were bumper to bumper.
I don't know if that's standard though or was an option to chose out of different warranty types of packages.
You might look in to leasing if you're going to stay new and trade every 3 years. Like the megas do.stwik, Rideandrepair and Fairweather Thank this. -
The 2000 FLD i started my career in. Was a 5 mpg truck. It was a 1 year old truck. Speed limit was 55 at that time. And fuel was sulphured.

Yes sir, we have the ISX15 with an Eaton Fuller autoshift. We average 7.6mpg and run ungoverned, of course, at the speed limit.
On light loads, 25k or less, we can break 8mpg.
The truck is great; we have zero issues and, aside from regular maintenance, have had almost no trouble. Literally, the most expensive maintenance issue we've had was new steer tires recently.
I'm just worried that, at 300k, our luck may run out.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

Running as many miles as you do. Doesn't sound like lease payments would be an issue.
You defenitly want reliability. An older truck might not give you that.stwik, Rideandrepair and Fairweather Thank this. -
