And certainly, if you are given sufficient notice about the hours that they need you to work you should be ready.

Some people sit around waiting for a load and then are expected to drive all night when they finally get one.

That's why I always went to the terminal to wait. That's when the clock starts. If you stick out the bad and come out with a clean record you can find the jobs like I had.

BTW going to the terminals have a much better impact than calling or sending an e-mail. Plus you can go to the places that don't advertise. So you'll never convince me that sitting on a computer looking for work is the only way. It's a tool that you can use along with looking for yourself. The worse any driver could do is let a school or recruiter find a job for him first without looking for himself. If you're finding work for a driver how do you know you're fulfilling that persons goals. That's what you should be teaching is setting goals and laying out a career path to what they need. Maybe you do that I don't know but what you've posted so far is you're finding the jobs and it sounds like you're fulfilling your needs. Sorry but that's what I see.

I'm actually looking into going into terminals too. Thing is, I'm moving and don't know the area well. I also don't know which terminals use 3rd part carriers and which terminals hire their own drivers. I've got about 25 addresses so far and I'll see if I have any luck.

You're right I've always been on dedicated. Seems like with OTR you got more control over your schedule. You can choose to take your 10 or wait a few more hours. Whenever I go into the truck stop at 10pm or later it's full, and by 9am it's empty. That would be a great work window.

People call me because they want to drive a truck, that is the personal goal that I help them fulfill. I use every avenue of employment that I know of, and spend a lot of time researching new avenues. I would be more than grateful if anyone could give me a new direction or avenue to point these guys in... believe me I would use it.

Some guys do have the ability to find jobs on their own and I encourage them to do so. Aside from that, I use a compiled list of companies that I know will hire a student driver. I can make links between student and company if I know about an opportunity, and I do actively look. I have students come back to see me who are doing well, and they are discovering new opportunities becoming available as they gain experience.

Of course I do what I do, in part, to fulfill my own means. I've got a wife and 2 kids to take care of. Just the same as you get up and drive to take care of your family. This is not a heartless process. These people sit down in my office look me in the eyes and tell me what there goals are. I may not be able to put them immediately in the position they want to be in, but I can point them in the right direction. Some lose their way, and I help them get back on track. I'm not like driver's solutions where I give them their choice of three companies. These men and women can choose to go to work anywhere they want to.

This is a forum for new drivers, if you have any resources that I can use, please tell me. That is why I am here.

:biggrin_2556: These are the people I'm worried about on the road. The ones that don't have the ability to find a job.

If they can't submit applications and do interviews. What the #### are they doing with a CDL?

They do have the ability to find a job. They can pound the pavement, and apply with every company in the state of Georgia but the answer is always the same. These companies do not hire drivers who have no experience. Again, how do you expect people to get experience driving a truck if they don't go to a company that is self insured and will take a chance with a student driver?

Maybe some of them should have read up on what a truck driver does...before coming to school.

I don't mean any slight to you. Personally, I don't envy you your job. Having to explain this to prospective students every day. But we get no less than 3 or 4 wannabees in this forum everyday, that truly believe they will be spending every night at home in their own bed. Or at the very least, every other night. Or, they think they're gonna be bringing home $750 plus a week, from day one.

And for me to pump air into that dream/hallucination would be a lie.

What little demand there is at this time, is mostly OTR long haul. There are a few regional, and even fewer locals. And those OTR positions are being offered to students freely, every day.

The mention of finding something local or intrastate, would be a red flag to me from the get go. Why they want to drive a truck...wouldn't even enter the picture. The answer would be obvious...I need a job, any job.

When the road construction cranks up with the new stim money. They'll need all kinds of drivers. Maybe that'll help. Until then, these guys could get over themselves. And pack their bags for a job that takes them out of state...and away from family.

What does this mean. Those OTR positions are being offered to students freely, every day. I don't anybody that's training drivers for free.

Also, everyone that comes through training does so knowing that they are going OTR, so I don't really understand the last comment you made either.
