Even NJ will allow this, but, you can not stop and leave the vehicle for any reason. The route must be the most direct route. Their rule is ammo and firearm in separate cases and locked. Air pistols are firearms, flare guns are considered firearms, wrist rockets are considered firearms, crossbows illegal to posses, my powder actuated fastener driver. . .

Lovely traversing the Peoples Republic of NJ.

This is a great thread, Ive read most of it... I'm actually posting cuz I just purchased the S&W 40 glock at a gunshow in ohio. Actually my boy got it for me along with the same one for himself. Sergeant in the marines. Obviously I know I'm good to store my heat in here properly just wondering if there's any states I should look out for in particular. Also no I'm not getting a concealed carry permit, only draws attention anyway. He says I'm golden just keep it stored accordingly and if anyone asks, yes I'm declaring a firearm, don't move and go with whatever the officer says. I know not to go to canada and am still tryin to find out how anal they are now with the twic cards at ports (which I havent been to yet and may go once or twice this year) about firearms. I know its legal to carry in my rig (and I could care less what my company says), just lookin for any weird rules of any states I may want to pay special attention to

Contrary to popular myth it is 100% legal to carry a firearm in most states. In the Peoples Republique of California I would be cautious but it is still legal to carry it so long as it is unloaded, cased, and locked in a compartment beyond your immediate reach.

The friendlier Constitutional states like Arizona allow you to carry your firearm in plain view on the dashboard of your vehicle believe it or not.

However: USE COMMON SENSE before taking this approach. Just because its legal doesn't always mean its smart. Boxed inside a glove box would probably be the wiser choice.

If you happen to live in AZ, UT, or NV, (and many other 2nd Amendment friendly states) Concealed Carry Weapons permits (CCW's) have reciprocity with many other* states.

Here's a link from the Deparment of Public Safety in AZ: http://ccw.azdps.gov/reciprocity/documents/Reciprocal_Agreements_Current.pdf

If you decide to carry a firearm with you for whatever reason.. use common sense. Do not advertise or volunteer the fact that you are armed. Never brandish the weapon for ANY reason unless your life or the life of an innocent person is in DIRECT and IMMINENT life threatening danger. Obviously carrying and conducting your daily activities with a firearm requires extra care and extra responsibility. Make sure you know the laws yourself before heading out on the highway with your firearm. If you have any questions or doubts contact each states Department of Public Safety or the Highway Patrol along your route. Know the laws and the facts before you head out on your trip.

GasHauler makes an excellent point. I agree with him and I also highly doubt a driver would ever truly need a firearm while going down the interstate. Although there could always be exceptional situations.. Bad things can happen any where to anyone at any time. In the extremely unlikely event that you would need a firearm.. You'll be glad you had it with you. As it may save your life or the lives of others. And in most cases you will never of had to fire a single shot.

The 2nd Amendment states "The Right of the People to Bear Arms Shall Not be Infringed."

Its your right but its also your responsibility.

    and sometimes, your duty.

Before qualcomms and cellphones got real big, we all used to have to rely on pay phones and calling cards for loads and directions. In most places, the industrial area is in the bad side of town. If I had to do an overnight in a bad area, there was a 3 step nightly ritual I would do

    1. lower the landing gear on the trailer (a van or reefer would be backed up against a wall.
    2.release the 5th wheel.
    3. lay my Colt Python across my chest before I went to sleep.

With qualcomms, GPS and cellphones, things are a bit better. I dont have to get out and use a payphone to get directions in the middle of the night anymore. Personally, I would still prefer to pack heat, but now I can get by without it.

Every port I have been to have signs warning that it is against the law to enter with a firearm. Some of the ports, depending on security, perform searches. A government controlled port will have Homeland Security guards and there will be zero tolerance.
Declaring a firearm, and an attempt to see if they can hold it for a driver, would be admission of attempting to enter and therefore illigal.
I can only imagine that the only way a driver could enter a secure port with a firearm would be to keep it hidden. The cost, if found, would be severe. Arrest, truck impounded, bond, loss of a job, stranded away from home. An arrest, and certainly a conviction, would mean the end of a TWIC card.
Anybody else have any ideas on what would happen?

Nothing would happen...as long as you rented a motel room for your firearm and didn't take it into the port, foreign trade zone, military base, etc.

    I have...more than once.

That question usually comes pretty soon after I hand them my CDL and CCW permit at the same time.

The states that it has happened in...TN, KY, IN, MS, FL, GA, VA, NC.

The one in KY was kinda neat...I happened to have a custom 1911 on me at the time (Baer stainless Stinger) and what started out as a DOT inspection turned into a pistol inspection, everybody in there wanted to see my gun. They all liked it, we talked about it...they handed it back and said "Have a nice day and drive safe", they only did a half ##### inspection of my truck and log book.

I have never had any trouble over it...but I have not been asked that question in NY, CA, IL, WI, MA, NJ (what I like to call the "communist states")...and if I was asked, I would have lied.

Companies should leave it up to the driver.

About the road rage....you have a point. Not everybody has the temperment to be armed.

Also...most people get the CCW permit but don't have the training on how to use the pistol....let alone the mindset.

The best weapon we have is the one between our ears...but no matter how hard you work at staying out of bad situations you still may eventually find yourself in one.

I probably have more weapons training than most on here (most cops too for that matter) and I still found my self in a situation where I'm glad I was armed. I didn't have to use it though, just having it was enough. I'm no wimp and I can hold my own (been in a scrap or two)...but 5 against one ain't good odds.
