This all sounds a little strange since I am approved to drive for Panther and will be talking to a fleet owner in the next couple of weeks.

Panther taking on a new truck and you being approved to work for a fleet owner are two different situations

I think vans are getting .85 right now

Really? Isn't that losing money to most one truck operations?

I have an older truck that needs the occasional repair. There is no way .85 would cover any and all expenses. I see most loads going for about $0.95/mile. Some go for as high as $1.27, but those are rare and get picked up quickly. Am I looking at normal rates, here? Back in November, $1.20 was "bad pay."

Called Quality Carriers again. Nothing. Left another message. Doubt is will matter. Is there something else I should be doing?

Panther cargo van are getting any where from .77 a mile to less. They are not taking any more vans but if there is one open yes they are taking on drivers. As long as you can find an owner they will take you on

But how much would a driver for a van owner make ? With straight trucks drivers get 60% of revenue and buy the fuel . So would van drivers get less than $.50 a mile minus fuel expense ? Then how could an owner support a truck on less than $.30 a mile ?

A few months back FECC cut van rates back to $.80 a mile an the rest followed suit . Straight truck rates are down and refusals are up . The expedititer carriers are letting contractors find backhauls through brokers to get out of dead areas .
Did you apply online to Quality Carriers ? That is the only way they accept applications . Hicksie just got hired there . He said he'll be off the internet until after orientation but orientation is only a week . They are hiring , partly because they updated log auditing software and are terminating drivers for log book falsification . If you drive for them you WILL run legal . They also bought Boasso which is helping their revenue a lot .

When I drove van for Panther I was on a 60 40 split. I paid for the fuel. Some of the extras were split some I got 100% of. I am sure that my owner was making money my van was brand new
