My friend was pre-hired at ROEHL a couple of months ago and checked in for his orientation last night at the Ellenwood terminal. Filled out paperwork and did his blood pressure and AGILITY test while being monitored for his pulse rate this a.m. Passed all with flying colors and then was road-tested by a ROEHL trainer. This guy was fresh out of Vo-Tech school and probably didn't drive a shift truck 4 times while in school. After completing the road test and having a few problems shifting the trainer told him that he just wouldn't feel comfortable with him under a load and they sent him packing. He's not really that mad at Roehl's decision as much as he is Coosa Valley Tech in Calhoun,Ga for not training him properly. The guy spent money on a passport as well as some $$$ for school(I think the GA Hope grant paid for most of it) but it just goes to show you as a few on here have warned that a pre-hire means NOTHING!! He was tested in an auto-shifter for his CDL and like I said had very little experience in a truck but what do these co.'s expect? He also told me while he was waiting for a cab that another gentleman was sent packing but this guy was no rookie. He was a ten yr veteran driver from Va. who was told that he over-revved the engine. The guy said that he had drove for Gulf Coast and was trying to find something before that go bankrupt next month. BEWARE of ROEL pre-hires folks. THEY MEAN NOTHING!!:biggrin_2552:

So do you really think your negative posts are going to keep someone from going to school and work? I really doubt it. I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers but constructive criticism may be more effective than constant negative browbeating of every newbie on here. Most have chosen their path already.

A Pre-Hire simply means you have been invited to go to orientation for an extensive interview process. By the way, this is very common in this industry. During orientation drivers are tested. This includes the physical, drug screen, and road test. If the prospective employee fails, or does poorly on any of these, they are sent packing.

Orientation is also an opportunity for new drivers to evaluate the companies policies, equipment, personnel, and facility. The applicant can (and does at times) withdraw. New applicants CAN withdraw at any point he/she chooses for any reason or no reason at all. In the event they do choose to leave of their own volition then they will normally have to find their own way home. Otherwise a carrier will usually foot the bill for sending the driver back home.

In the current economy carriers have a glut of qualified drivers to choose from. Your friend is a beginner and the tester apparently felt it would take too much time to train him on a manual shift (which he should have been trained on at school) and take the chance of damaging a working truck.

Your friend should have done more research into the industry and the school, BEFORE he went to school to begin with. The fact is the vast majority of companies STILL utilize manual shift trucks.

Thank you for taking the time to post this as it will serve as an example to other readers to look for training schools that do in fact train on manual shift trucks.

Also be sure the School is accredited as well. Otherwise you are throwing your money away.

So Roehl is bad because they didn't hire a driver they didn't feel comfortable about. Get a clue, Is it Roehls fault he can't shift?

What do you expect when hiring a student? I think he's more angry with the school than anyone about it. Yes I agree it's not their fault but I think they are dismissing people for anything. I heard they just fired 3 drivers with 7 yrs for idling while in TX running the AC because it was 105 degrees!!

Accredited means next to nothing . Some people will never be drivers . The schools know it . They say they train people to get their CDL . Some will get hired and some that get hired will have a trainer boot them out of a truck .

I doubt that they were fired for idling in Texas, plus you only heard it. I have been with ROEHL for a couple years and am based out of Garland and you would think I would have had heard that if it had happened.
