I don't know what on earth it is people see in a Volvo. A good friend of mine got his boss to buy him a Volvo specifically even though his boss's fleet is chock full of super pretty long nosed Western Stars.
Eh....
Cheers -
Hey there DC, thought I'd help you out a little
Volvo was the most manueverable truck I could find, and also the most comfortable for long miles on the road. The first time it hit the road, I couldn't believe 70mph would be noiseless (no wind whistle or rattles) and smooth. Also hard to beat the mpg out of an ISX and 13speed in an aero design, and I guess I should mention that my 780 weighs 18,060 pounds without fuel and about 20,500 with the twin 150 gallons (US) topped.
I've driven a Pete 379, Freightshaker Century, Columbia, and FLD Classic, a few different Macks, and the Volvo was the one that I liked the best. It just "felt" right to me, if that makes sense. I do have to say that the new International Lone Star grabs my attention, but I'm nowhere near ready to buy a brand new rig.
On another note, my dad (OTR O/O for about 40+ years) has been driving Volvos since the White/GMC badge was on the hood, and hasn't owned anything else since.
Although I haven't heard much on the new FH16 700hp engine, I can imagine it moves out like lightning! -
I don't doubt that the new Volvo will move like a civilized rabbit trying to race it's digestive tract to the washroom after eating some bad lettuce but everything you mentioned above you can find in a Western Star with the exception of the turning radius.
Frankly, the turning radius is the only thing I can think of that Volvo has over other brands. Aside from that, they seem like a pile of electrical failures. A Western Star has a roomy cab and you can get all the room you need in a comfy bunk. Fuel millage wise, I've seen more and more new Star Cars on the road and have heard more and more good things about the fuel economy.
A western star may also come in heavier than a Volvo but that depends on how one specs their rig.

I would have one in a heart beat, thats not to say I don't like my Western Star as I love it.
We can only get the COE Volvo's over here before I brought the Star I looked at Volvo but tare weight and price let it down.
Also I would only keep one until the warranty ran out far too many moving bits in that cab to go wrong. -
Some folks just like ugly trucks. True story. -
If the Volvo was a mechanically dependable, as it is comfortable, it couldn't be beaten. But just speaking for myself, I would rather give up a bit of comfort to have a truck that wasn't costing me money with a lot of down time.

If i ever get out of debt i will be giving up my 379ext hood for a new 780!!
I took a friends new 780 for one round out to california and back and all I have to say is SIGN ME UP!!!!!!!!!! That is one quit and comfortable truck, and i got 6.9 round trip compared to my usual 5.2
