You guys are brilliant, I bet you have been saving those comebacks up for two weeks. Actually it is Crete and Gordon. On the way home as I went by the interstate, at the fuel stop was a May driver. May paid him to sit there with his hood up because they know I get my groceries every Saturday at this time and would be coming by. He likes May, has been with them for a year and gets 13000 miles every month. Something is wrong with this theme here. I know , I know, he is only busy because forty drivers just quit. My instructor drove for 38 years, his take on May is they had a bad rap for quite awhile, but the news coming down now is they have pulled it together.

While I hope that your experience is better than the person's who has offered insight on them, be aware that it would be rather silly to expect that May Trucking would send in people to drop by to do PR work in swaying students in their direction, who were not so thrilled with the company. Of course the people sent in to the school would sing the praises of the company.

The name of the site is called "The Trucker's Report". We encourage people to post their experiences in dealing with companies out there. That is the basis of what we stand for here. This is where the driver has a voice.

And again, your instructor is biased in what he relates. His compensation, for the most part, is generated from the partnerships that the companies have with the school, and is paid to them by these companies when the school places their students with them. Very few schools will screen companies for compatibility and standards. So to take this person's words with anything but a grain of salt is putting too much faith in someone, once you understand the arrangement.

BSU's list of employers that they work with in placement, has Swift Transportation, Inc. right there at the top of the list, and we all know that Swift sucks....big time.

May Trucking Company doesn't draw very many complaints, but then in the grand scheme of things, they are rather small in comparison to some others out there, and they operate mostly on the west coast. Their safety stats are average, and maybe slightly better than average.

I'm sure that they are far from the worst, but certainly not among the best. Without question, some people will love them, and some people will have problems working for them, but I wouldn't anticipate it being a complete utopia.

I say this, because they are another carrier that hires newbies routinely. The west coast is a tough area, and drivers tend to stay where they are, because believe or not, carriers that are located west of the Mississippi, with a few exceptions, fare far better on the satisfaction scale. So the fact that this is the case, may explain why they have a tough time keeping drivers in their seats.

Now, let me offer what I see that looks fantastic about May Trucking Company on the surface. They pay a newbie $500.00 a week while in training, which is well above what most other companies offer newbies. They offer tuition reimbursement. They offer a starting solo wage of 32 cents per mile, once you begin driving on your own. After a year, a driver will be making .36 cents per mile. They offer six month raises, which I'm sure come with strings attached, every six months. That's a great start to a career, if they offer working conditions and a steady enough workload, to make all that pan out to something worthwhile.

If it is, as the gentleman above offers, a problem maintaining a decent week's worth of mileage, then all the above will mean nothing, because when one's pay is based upon performance, and there is not enough to allow a driver to perform sufficiently, then people will not hang around long.

If they have a policy in place to forcibly take driver's earnings if they idle too much without acceptable exceptions in place, then that is a big problem, and something that I personally would not care to endure. If they are not maintaining their equipment, then that's another red flag. If they treat drivers who decide to terminate so shabbily as to send them packing by foot, as the man suggests, then that is a nail in their coffin, in my opinion.

Drivers quit, and the very least that a company can do, is to offer the same respect that they did in getting them to a site where they were hired. You don't abandon them, simply because they quit. Right is right, and wrong will always be wrong.

A good company would never want this kind of bad blood to be out there about them. So, I don't know if what he offers is true and correct, because quite often there are two sides to every story. That aside, the fact is that this person felt inclined to offer that this was his personal experience, and if it is supported by others in the future, I would not be inclined to be so kind to them in my assessment of their company.

Right now, we have one unsubstantiated claim. Tomorrow we may have someone else who supports it. Either way, it's very disturbing, and it's believable, because it's not unheard of for some companies to do this.

See...if I were to run across something like this about a company that I am considering, I would burn up the phone lines for someone to assure me that these kind of things are not occurring or to allow me to read between the lines to confirm that they are indeed occuring, and I would listen carefully to any answers to questions in regard to the issues. I can sniff out deception in a second.

Use that gut instinct. Go with it every time. Disregard it, and it bites you every time. If the red flags are flying, and you decide to go ahead and play the game in spite of them, then it's hard to blame anyone else if they were flags of warning, and you failed to recognize them for what they were.

    Huh?

40 drivers quit? That's roughly 4.5% of their fleet. You don't define the timeline in which this occured, but offer that they "just quit", but let's say that this represents a month's worth of drivers that they turned. In a year, that would mean that they would turn half of all of their drivers. That's not so bad.

But what if this happened in the last week? That would represent a 234% turnover rate. That would be VERY bad. I'd want to know a bit more about the what's the when's, and why's that 40 drivers "just quit".

Geez...I dunno. Forgive me, but when I read that 40 drivers couldn't hang with them in a recent span of time, it kinda puts a little doubt on that statement, unless of course, he was speaking that they have pulled it all together in the last month or so, and that's not enough time to make that a dependable statement to work with.

You may not have been seeking any advice, but if I understand things correctly, you are not completely set on going with May Trucking Company. I read enough to have serious doubts about them.

Maybe you ought to consider going with Crete. They at least have a very good track record out there, and I have personal experience with them, and you'll never read anywhere, the kind of stuff that started this thread. They're not perfect, but they are decent enough for me to recommend sending a newbie to for a chance at a fine start in the industry.....

It is funny you are in what did you say school and checking out alot of forums thats good but I bet if you check this forum out alittle deeper there are a bunch of oldtimers those with more than 10 years driving experience. I think I would do more listening to those who have been out hear. There was a time May was doing all their hiring from India you could tell by their head gear it was not from the states and they were very rude and unkind to females not to mention they would just park their trucks infront of the fuel island in The Pilot down on 5 south of Portland they kept terrible care of their trucks No I have never worked for them haven't needed to there are lots of good companies out there But I do listen to those who have and who know other if you think companies don't send drivers out to recruit you are very foolish they do what ever they need too to get drivers. Just like England, US West and a bunch of others I would check your list a couple of time and be careful you don't want to get branded as a job hopper good luck:sign2: dont let it rain on your parade:toothy2: Nanny

Another old guy who can't hold a intelligent conversation without personal attacks. I never said I knew everything. What I said is I have spent a lot of time researching May and I have not heard the doom and gloom the OP has relayed here. I have talked to four May drivers this week and their story is 180 degrees opposite what was relayed. This thread has been up for what two weeks now and no one substantiates his story yet I get first hand feedback and hundreds of posts by multiple present and past May drivers saying working for May is alright and your response to me beause your opinion differ from mine is to make jokes that I am a DA newbie. Believe me there is questionable things about May that merit investigation and you being your a moderator I would think would welcome honest conversation without the crap you threw my way.

It amazes me that you didn't put your age on the forum but it doesn't surprize me. It is apparent that you don't respect the age of others or their experiences so I wish you the best if you become a May driver we all started somewhere we were all Newbee's at one time but you have a chip on your shoulder and that is something that will cause you problems out here. The company I work for requires at the min of 3 years experience and put you off in a year old Pete. I have a 2006 Peterbuilt with a cat 18 Speed given to me in respect for my 10 years of driving and always being on time. and yes I made over 53,000.00 last year... That is call work...
I get paid weekends and am more than a number...but I don't know what I am talking about so go go to May, Schnieder, JB Hunt would love you go and find a way of life...but dont come and say we were right and please dont come in here disrespecting our old timers who you aren't a red spot on a drivers rear-end...dont you know that almost every company has hiring bonus for your referral....I doubt if you get this and I am wasting my time you just need to go out and find out for yourself but please for God's sake be safe I have family other than my self who drives...

    You call this an attack?

Is this an attack as well?

I'm not that old, and I believe I could debate you as well. I am trying to avoid the pissing matches though. Regardless of what I say, you will not believe it.....simply because you already know everything.

When I came up I had to learn the hard way. I am so glad there are sites like this one who can warn you away before you make the mistake.............some folks just don't want the help............guess that is why so many guys get Swifted.
