I own and drive a haul and tow myself. I do well but get double loaded back from runs 90% of the time . Single pick up drivers - I don't see how they do it. Entering slow time of the season right now though. It is cyclical.
-
I thought about getting a truck and trailer to haul multiple units.
-
Pinnacle quoted me 1.10-$1.25 per loaded mile. No indication as to how the miles are calculated. There are a slew of fees that they want to take out of the settlement as well. Portion of the email is pasted below... Sounds like a cheap way to get your stuff moved, but not so good for the guy moving it....
Driver Requirements are:
2 years verifiable OTR experience with at least a 30ft trailer
If you are a CDL driver, we will need 10 years work history
If you are NON CDL drivers, will need 3 years work history
Truck Requirements are:
2005 or newer – if older may be considered for approval with pictures of all 4 sides of vehicle.
¾ HD or 1 ton pickup, prefer diesel but will accept gas
5th Wheel hitch and a bumper hitch with a 2” ball and a 2-5/16” ball
Pay Information:
Pay is by the loaded mile with No pay for deadhead miles
Current rate is: $1.11 - $ 1.25 again this for loaded miles only
Avg miles is 1500 – 2000 loaded per week
We advance 50% upfront at time of dispatch
Final pay is completed the same day of delivery if paperwork is received by the cut off time
All monies owed are loaded to a EFS Mastercard which is issued at Orientation
Other General information:
Application are all done online through Tenstreet and you are contacted within 24 – 48 hrs. after we receive the application
We follow all DOT rules for Hours of Service – we comply with the 70 hr. / 8 day rule
Logs are done through Keep truckin app which is downloaded to your smart phone or a tablet that has wi-fi connection
Trailer pickup is available 24 hr./7 days a week
This is a NON Forced dispatch, you pick the loads you want to take and you pick your home-time.
Minimum load requirement each month is 4 to stay active -
Two and three trailers moved at one time pay more.
GreyBeardGuy Thanks this. -
Pretty big investment with needing both the power unit and a trailer. Sounds like empty is not paid. That sucks!
-
Might as well get a trailer that can pick up RVs and cars at that point and avoid a lot of the empty miles.
-
Agreed, still thinking about it!

Not getting deadhead pay is fairly common for owner operators in any segment of the transportation industry. You just need to get an honest answer as to what the deadhead percentage is and see where everything averages out compared to your operating expenses. Also, if you are running with some of these RV companies, backhauls are not an option. They do not even look for backhauls. They want you to get on back and get another RV. To them, backhauls are a waste of their time. And your contract may stipulate that you cant find backhauls yourself and haul it under their numbers.
